I'm writing this because I know of no other way to effectively spread this message. If you don't care, please discard this and go on with your bad self. Maximum RocknRoll magazine publishes a punk rock equivalent to the yellow pages every year called "Book Your Own Fucking Life". It contains listings submitted from punk record labels, zines, radio stations, and such from all over the world. The newest edition, #5, was just released this past week. I have submitted an entry in every issue from the beginning. I also worked for MRR for three years; I left after being disgusted with a lot of hatred and prejudice expressed in the magazine. Anyone who has read my zine (Outpunk) would know about that. In the last issue of Outpunk, I wrote a lengthy essay entitled "What's Wrong With Punk Rock?", which included a lot of the things about MRR that I felt were offensive and in need of exposing. I titled the section about MRR "Maximum Retro and Racism", and included some of my observations pertaining to the title. I expected some sort of reaction, and I'm getting it. Since writing the piece, I've gotten a lot of incredible letters from people who have been waiting years for someone to write what I did. I really appreciate that others see things the way I do. I'm also fully accountable for what I write, and have been called on a few points as well. This is just fine. It's within mine or anyone else's rights to say what they feel. Imagine my surprise upon opening the newest issue of Book Your Own Fucking Live to look for my Outpunk entry. Instead, I discovered something **not written by me**. Here's what it says: ************* "Attention all bands: send your demos! We're especially interested in bands of color or with women members, regardless of what you sound like. Our punk is multi-cultural and colorblind; we don't restrict ourselves in any way. Celebrate diversity." ************* See, I didn't write this. It was written by Tim Yohannon, the editor of MRR and the subject of a part of my essay. I called up the people responsible for entering in the listings, who confirmed that it was not done by them but added at MRR. I called up Tim Yohannon tonight (4/21/96) and after asking him who did it, was told to fuck off. Three things this brings up: 1) While Tim has a right to print what he wants in his magazines, I expect him to be able to put his name to it. He is misrepresenting me by writing his sarcastic and thoroughly offensive piece in place of my entry. This is extremely low and petty, not to mention cheap. 2) Because of this, people are going to be misled into thinking I wrote this entry. While I have no problem being labeled "multi-cultural" or pro-women, I find the entry very sarcastic and off-putting. 3) The idea that I'm someone to be made fun of because I would dare to identify with "multi-cultural" or pro-women is highly offensive. It speaks for itself. I ask that you spread the word to anyone who you know that reads BYOFL or MRR, since I can't get the message across to every one of them. I can try, however. I also will put the idea out there that, if this pisses you off, to call or write Tim Yohannon yourself. His number is (415) 648 3561. The address for MRR is POB 460760, San Francisco, CA 94146. The street address is 484 Clipper St., San Francisco, CA 94114. Tell him that you find his behavior immature and revolting. Please spread this message to any and every interested party. Thank you - Matt Wobensmith Outpunk record label and magazine *********************************************** WHAT TO DO WITH YOURSELF: -----> from New Zealand <----- -----> SPACE DUST & BROTHER LOVE <----- will play instore this Saturday April 27 at 4 pm * AMM * Beanbenders this Saturday, April 27, 830 pm. we are selling tickets for $12. cash only. * Blowhole with (beloved AQ-reader) Miss Murgatroid * Bottom of the Hill this Friday, April 26. * Scud Mountain Boys * Noe Valley Ministry, Friday, May 17. we will have tickets for sale a couple of weeks prior to this show. unfortunately they'll cost $12 cos Our Current Favorite Band is opening for Joe Henry aka Madonna's brother-in-law. * Tortoise / Sea & Cake / 5ive Style * Bimbo's, May 25. * Spaceheads & Magic Pacer * have a bunch of shows the weekend of May 17th. i will post the dates next week, do not miss this band, we hope it will be like the first time DogFaced Hermans came to town, do you remember? *********************************************** GIGS AVAILABLE IN MONTANA: contact Flesh <flesh@gigantor.arlington.com> "Missoula is a pretty large city by Montana standards. The city covers the same area as San Francisco proper (just not as dense). The best way to describe it, is to say that it could be compared to San Francisco about 15 years ago. Missoula is considered the "liberal" city of the state. A title that is held up with pride. Missoula has more artists, authors, and "culture" than most cities do in north america (no joke). As far as music goes, there is a ska sensation that is currently in hold. The Skatalites played a sold-out show, with a local ska band (skoi-dots) opening. Two clubs tend to have the best music. The Moose, and Jays. While ALL bands will find that they can not only get booked here but will have a crowd that wants to hear them, ska, surf, funk, and lounge bands are in high demand. Bands and individuals can give us a call at (406)-721-3200. If If you need any aditional info, feel free to email me." *********************************************** The Aquarius Records New Arrivals has 470 readers.
