HIS NAME IS ALIVE "Stars On E.S.P." (4AD) cd 14.98
Their new effort is gorgeous as usual, with those precious female
vocals. You oughtn't be surprised there's a song called "Beech Boys" on
here... as anticipated, "Stars" is 4AD-flavored sweet pop, yet more
disoonant at times and thus interesting than the last HNIA album. Warren
Defever slices on some of the noisy layered stuff (his other band) Princess
Dragon Mom likes to cook up.

INCREDIBLE FORCE OF JUNIOR "Let the World fall Apart" (Up) cd 13.98
Energetic pop you can sink teeth into, a la local favorites Pee.
Extra-high quality.

BEERFRAME #6 zine 2.50 The newest collection of Paul Lukas' delightful
product reviews. This edition of "the journal of inconspicuous consumption"
features canned pork brains in milk gravy on the cover, yum.

BECK "Odelay" (whatever big label it's on, Geffen?) cd 14.98
Mr. Beck back with a brilliant record, in extremely large part due to
producing team the Dust Bros. (of "Paul's Boutique" fame). "Rap", folk,
pop, & lots else besides. Look out for the vinyl sometime later this
month, we hope.

DE LA SOUL "Stakes Is High" (again, some large corporation who
De La righteously takes to task) cd 15.98

JIMMIE DALE GILMORE "Braver New World" (Elektra) cd 16.98
What a voice, that of an angel. Are there angels in Buddhism, we are not
sure. A long long time ago in Lubbock, Texas, Joe Ely, Butch Hancock, and
Jimmie Dale formed the Flatlanders, who released classic selftitled album
(still available on cd). Gilmore's wiry, ethereal vocals on "Dallas" still
generates chills down the collective Aquarius back, nor does this new album
disappoint.

V/A "AC/DC" (Skin Graft) 2x7"+comic book 8.98
Shellac, Big'n, U.S. Maple, and Brise-Glace - all covering their
favorite AC/DC compositions. What more need be said?

NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE "Broken Arrow" (some big label) lp/cd 17.98/16.98
More jams from grunge's granddad and those Crazy Horse kids. Get past
the first song and this is a lovely, very emotional, satisfying album.

PATTI SMITH "Gone Again" (Arista) cd 16.98
In response to reports of painful rockcrit overdoses via pageful o'
Patti reviews in SF Weekly, including those from Bill Wyman crony Jim
DeRogatis and Ms. Sarah Vowell (Gina Arnold in sheep's clothing, accuses
Paul Ashby's letter to the editor), we hereby refrain from further frothing
up the fray.

U-ZIQ "Bluff Limbo" (Rephlex) 2xlp 17.98
If a record could laugh it might sound like this long lost U-ziq album
on Aphex Twin's label. Musical horsing around, much like his Clear
full-length (released under the moniker Jake Slazenger). Very accessible,
full of layered sonic elements, like epic dance music for the easily bored.
We're still waiting to get the CD...

SQUAREPUSHER "Port Rhombus" (Warp) 12"ep/cd 8.98/9.98
Jazzy jungle with really freaky rhythms programmed by Tom Jenkinson
a.k.a. Squarepusher, current darling of the idm-list (idm, you know -- what
they call INTELLIGENT DANCE MUSIC). Smooth yet wacked. Challenging not
boring. If you like Wagonchrist/Plug/Luke Vibert then this will meet your
high standards. Plus we've got the full length, "Feed Me Weird Things,"
back in stock.

MICROSTORIA "Init Ding" (Thrill Jockey) cd
(from the latest Forced Exposure update): If you've been paying
attention at all you know about Oval and their masterful brand of
underground electronica as issued by Mille Plateaux -- some of the most
shockingly desirable music of the 90s. Microstoria is a due made up of
Oval's Markus Popp and Mouse On Mars' Jan St. Werner, and the music they
make is beautifully abstract electronic wave manipulation, looped and
weirdly grooved for maximum pleasure zone entertainment. If you've never
been able to find a handle on contemporary "ambient," here's something to
try.

PLUG "1+2" (Angel) 2x12" 12.98
Lucky for everybody these recordings have finally been issued in one
package, the first 2 (of 3) excursions into some of the most fun,
challenging, completely exciting & masterful recombinations of drum & bass,
rap samples, and breezy synth melodies from that genius Plug (a.k.a. Luke
Vibert, a.k.a. Wagonchrist). Highly recommended.

DJ COLDCUT "Journeys By DJ Coldcut" (Moonshine) cd 19.98
   a.k.a. DJ Food, y'know.

V/A "Headz" (Mo'Wax) 2xcd 24.00
A great compilation, finally back in print, that collects some of the
best 12" tracks documenting the (hmmm what to call it this time)
experimental breakbeat scene centered round this English label. Features
Northern California's hero DJ Shadow, HowieB, U.N.K.L.E., Autechre, Attica
Blues, Nightmares On Wax, Tranquility Bass & many others. We have never met
anyone who was not completely enamored of this music soon after purchasing
it.

U.N.K.L.E. "Time Has Come" (Mo'Wax) cdep
Now o.o.p. 12" reissued on disc from folks you may know from their
remixes of Tortoise and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. One of the better
eps on Mo'Wax, it's got 4 delightful & v. different (from each other)
versions of one piece. Highly recommended.

V/A "Electric Ladyland" (Force Inc./Mille Plateaux) cd 20.00
V/A "Electric Ladyland II" (Force Inc./Mille Plateaux) cd 20.00
"Electric soul for rebels" -- two volumes of electronica. Contributors
include Zulutronic, Alec Empire, Techno Animal, DJ Vadim, and plenty more.

BUCKETHEAD "The Day of The Robot" (SubMeta) cd 14.98
Masked madman of the fretboard meshes his mechano-metal with the beats
of the UK's DJ Ninj for an excursion into the exciting world of Jungle!
Buck's pal Bill Laswell provides the bass. This could be the album with
which to introduce your Zorn-o-centric friends to jungle ...

DEAD CAN DANCE "Spiritchaser" (4AD) cd 15.98

ALEX CHILTON "Live In London" (Fuel) cd 13.98

ALAN VEGA "Dujang Prango" (2.13.61) cd 14.98
Former Suicide frontman's new disc on Henry Rollins' label.

V/A "Trainspotting" soundtrack (Capitol) cd 16.98
Brian Eno, Iggy Pop, Blur, New Order, Lou Reed, Pulp, Elastica etc. All
the hotties!

V/A "State of the Union" (Atavistic) 2xcd 14.98
Elliot Sharp put together this two-disc compilation of everybody under
the sun (in the improv/downtown/noisy/post-rock field that is) doing brief
tracks at a bargain price, all in the vital effort to fight Censorship.
Updated from a previous issue on Fred Frith's label...some names: Zorn,
Ginsberg, Marc Ribot, Ui, DJ Spooky, Borbetomagus, and literally a hundred
plus others!

SOUL COUGHING "Irresistible Bliss" (Slash) cd 15.98
Second album. They are smart enought o sample Raymond Scott and ask
Steve Fisk to produce some of the songs.

TRANCE MISSION "Head Light" (City of Tribes) cd 13.98
Local group. "Despite the primary use of the term to describe a current
variety of techno, the trance is arrived at by a totally different musical
approach. Trance Mission plays an unusual fusion of liquid jazz and 'world
music'. This is acheived by mixing clarinets (Beth Custer) and traditional
wind instruments (Kenneth Newby) over a vibrating didgeridoo drone (Stephen
Kent) and multi-tracked percussion Instruments (John Loose playing tablas,
bod hrans, kalimbas, etc.) The song styles range from Middle Eastern to
African, European folk to Zappa-esque jazz."

LAMBCHOP "Hank" Merge) 10" 6.98
"Introducing The Nashville Sound". Live ep proves they haven't lost it.

THE DELTA 72 (Touch & Go) lp/cd 8.98/13.98
   For fans of The Make-Up.

BEAK "Autoselfreplicationalism" (Insignificant) cd 10.98
San Francisco band maybe comparable to Jesus Lizard - With Saxophones -
i.e. twisted rock in free jazz mode. Pretty darn good.

V/A "Naut's Landing" 7" 3.50 Hey! Members of Halo Benders, Sone and
Bugskull playing in some new bands.

THE FEELINGS "Especially For You" (Darla) cd 12.98
With members of Sone and Built To Spill.

LONESOME ORGANIST (Thrill Jockey) 7" 3.50
A guy and an organ - sounds like a party to me.

WEST COAST MODERN DAY PUNK ROCK ORCHESTRA "Correspondence"
   (Little Brother) 7" 3.50
The Orchestra includes Mike Watt, Nels Cline and a fellow from Drive
Like Jehu.

COWS "Old Gold 1989-1991" (AmRep) cd 13.98
What was once vinyl is now aluminum, but sounds no less than like it did
before.

SIX FINGER SATELLITE "Clone Theory" (Load) 12" 8.98
New, limited edition platter of sci-fi/disco rock from Aq-favorites
Chrome, I mean 6FS.

SCISSOR GIRLS "Staticland" (Load) 10" 7.98
Snappy new ep from female Chicago no-wave band often described as the
Raincoats meet Melt Banana.

DUB NARCOTIC "Boot Party" (K) LP 7.98
Calvin & co. continue to pack the dancefloor.

NELS CLINE "Chest" (Little Brother) 2xlp/cd 15.98/14.98
Gorgeous guitar improv jazz meets Sonic Youthian noise from Nels'
talented trio. Vinyl boasts an extra track.

MX-80 "I've Seen Enough" (Atavistic) cd 14.98
A new album from this classic Bay Area band.

MAN IS THE BASTARD "Thoughtless" (Theologian) lp/cd 8.98/9.98
California's comrades in power violence want you to get political with
their noise. Hardcore to ambient, always heavy. The lp is an handsome
picture disc, and the cd comes with poster of the picture disc graphics,
you can't lose.

PAN-THY-MONIUM "III - Khaooos & Kon-Fus-Ion" (Relapse) cd 13.98
Instead of worshipping Satan, these bizarre Swedish metallers made up
their own pantheon of gods, foremost among them "Raagoonshinnaah," the
mythology of whom they celebrate on the four epic tracks of this release.
The music ranges from bluesy psychedelic rock, to grunting grindcore, to
free jazz, to ambient synth-scapes...a few spins of this and you too might
find religion.

MZ.412 "In Domine Dei Nostri Satanas Luciferi Excelsi"
   (Cold Meat Industry) cd 18.98
Corpse-painted industrial Scandinavians. Title kinda sums it up.

BURZUM "Burzum/Aske" (Misanthropy) cd 15.98
The Count's first lp and ep on one handy disc. Solo, raw Black Metal
from ex-Mayhem guitarist Count Grishnack who is taking hiatus from group
after offing bandmate.

SPACE STREAKINGS (Skin Graft) 7"+comic book 5.50
   Japanese outerspace looniness.

CHISATO YAMADA "Fantastic World" (PSF) cd 19.98
(from recent Forced Exposure update penned by the solemn J. Johnson):
PSF debut by Chisato Yamada, the godfather of Tsugaru Jamisen (the
traditional three-stringed folk instrument from the north of Japan -- also
played by Zorn hero Michihiro Sato). Here Yamada's amazingly vibrant,
percussive attack and spirit power are featured in two avant settings. Two
tracks recorded late last year feature Keiji Haino on guitar and
percussion, amply fulfilling Kan Mikami's prediction that these two masters
would create create a fuckin' immense music if they ever met. The other
three tracks are a suite for contemporary flute/percussion trio and
tsugaru-jamisen, composed by Ken'ei Sasamori, recorded in 1978 and promptly
lost for the next 17 years. Yamada is a true out-on-the-edge innovator, and
these classic recordings prove that his experimental leanings have a long
history. Yamada's age (he's now in his sixties) has only served to increase
his unique power and authority. An essential, and too little known voice!

MERZBOW "Rainbow Electronics II" (Dexter's Cigar) cd 13.98
From Jim O'Rourke and David Grubb's new Drag City imprint, the
previously-unreleased companion piece to "Rainbow Electronics", one of the
classics that made the King of Japanese Noise worthy of his title. Fine
stuff with lots going on, and "rainbow electronics" is as fitting a
description as any.

MAINLINER "Mellow Out" (Charnel Music) cd 11.98
A new side project from members of Japan's High Rise and Musica
Transonic, wherein they manage to outdo themselves again in the realms of
psychedelic heavy garage improv distortion overload. If you like either of
the aforementioned bands, you will want this, and it's a domestic release
which means you can buy two.

JOE MEEK "Work In Progress: The Triumph Sessions" (RPM) cd 15.98
Particularly famous for the hit "Telstar", Joe Meek was Britain's
homicidal/suicidal counterpart to Phil Spector... This disc features rare
and previously unissued tracks (i.e. demos credited to the likes of The
Fabulous Flee-Rakkers) produced by Meek circa 1960. Crazy.

                               Galaxie 500
                               Galaxie 500
After many out of print years, Galaxie 500's nearly impossible to find back
catalog has found a home with Rykodisc. On September 24, 1996, a 4 CD box
set will hit the stores, compiling all three of their albums (Today, On
Fire, and This Is Our Music) and adding a 4th disc of rarities, unreleased
tracks and demos. Long considered pioneers of the post-Velvets atmospheric
space-rock crowd, Galaxie 500's compositions made brilliant noise out of
quiet. Their short career spawned some of the most influential music of its
time, and garnered lavish raves from critics and press alike. All the
records have been remastered by Kramer, resulting in a whole new realm of
sonic excellence, and beautiful artwork exclusive to the box has been
created by Naomi Yang. As an extra bonus, their four videos (directed by
Sergio Huidor) have been added to the discs as enhanced CD tracks that will
playable in multisession-capable CD-ROM drives, making this release a
completists dream come true.

"Well, the original idea was to make a specialist shop
for metal in general, but that's a long time ago. Normal metal
isn't very popular any more, all the children are listening to
'death' metal now. I`d rather be selling Judas Priest than
Napalm Death, but at least now we can be specialized within
'death' metal and make a shop where all the trend people know
that they will find all the trend music. This will help us earning
money so that we can order more EVIL records to the evil people.
"But no matter how shitty music we have to sell, we'll make
a BLACK METAL look on the shop, we've had a couple of 'actions' in
churches lately, and the shop is going to look like a black church
in the future. We`ve also thought about having total darkness
inside, so that people would have to carry torches to be able to
      see the records."
