Please visit us at new location on Valencia Street between 21st and 22nd in our proper neighborhood The Mission. Ooh and aah at the pretty pulley curtains, the floor we sanded on our goddamn knees, the sparkly gold circles on walls, the painted sidewalk, the galvanized steel countertop, the (let's just admit it) girlyness of it all. Special thanks are due to AQ-subscriber/carpenter extraordinaire Johnny Poynton who built our counter and all the beautiful blue cd bins. ()()()()(--- In This Issue ---)()()()() new arrivals (lots of them cos it's been a while) black metal -- Bungle items -- seven inches zines -- gossip & news -- email ordering guidelines a quote from Billy Wimsatt ----* ----* Record of the Summer : ----* THE OLIVIA TREMOR CONTROL (Flydaddy) cd/lp 13.98/11.98 "Music from the Unrealized Film Script: Dusk at Cubist Castle" Simply one of the best albums of the year, a psychedelic masterpiece that makes a lot of pretty noise as well. The Olivias dress up unpredictably structured pop songs with uplifting lyrics, strange embellishments, and environmental/ambient washes. The vocalists' harmonies are exquisite, give us goosebumps. Recorded with Robert from the Apples (in Stereo) and featuring other Elephant6 collective members, fine folks from Secret Square and Neutral Milk Hotel. Every single song is special and lovely. The double cd with extra tracks (described below) is going fast, not to return. In the Olivias' own words: "If you buy the records, you will get all the Dusk at Cubist Castle pop songs plus some dream sequences and a surprise. The CD will contain all the songs since it is a longer format and the first 2,000 will have the dream sequences as an extra CD with it so you can finally get a decent night's sleep. The pop songs will tell the story of Dusk at Cubist Castle, what it means, introduce the characters, the plot, etc. The dream sequences are for everyone to enjoy, but are actual dreams or time frame happenings from people in the film. For instance, Jacqueline and Olivia. We hope Yoko Ono will make a guest appearance because she's in the script." ----* ----* Record of the Indian Summer : ----* ZUMPANO "Goin' Through Changes" (Sub Pop) lp/cd 10.98/11.98 THE pop record of the year. An amalgamation of all those AM radio anthems you heard day in and day out as a child yet it's somehow still wholly original. A pinch of Jimmy Webb, a dash of Chicago, a little Kinks, a little Zombies. Horns!... Piano!... Harmonies!... Somehow it still rocks!... Andee and Byram swear by this record & even Windy loves it. Allan loves it too but Andee refuses to believe him. ----* ----* Attention! : ----* PAUL D. MILLER (DJ SPOOKY) "Death In The Light Of The Phonograph" (Asphodel) cd 22.00 We are the only store in the country to -officially- carry this rare, very limited cd from Miller, aka DJ Spooky. Excellent loops and soundscapes created for his recent art exhibit, plus the digipakaging includes two beautiful booklets with Spooky's writing and artwork. His next appearance in SF is around November 15, see gossip section for details. ----* ----* Selected New (More or Less) Arrivals : ----* BARRY ADAMSON "Oedipus Schmoedipus" (Mute) cd 14.98 Former Bad Seed graces us with another of his jazzy, evocative soundtrack-instead-of-the-movie albums. The Miles Davis reworking is cool, plus Nick Cave and Jarvis Cocker appear. ALAN VEGA, ALEX CHILTON, & BEN VAUGHN "Cubist Blues" (2.13.61) cd 15.98 ALASTAIR GALBRAITH "Morse & Gaudylight" (Emperor Jones/Trance) cd 8.98 2 long out-of-print recordings of ethereal, lovely voice, violin & guitar, New Zealand style. Last month's instore performance with John Darnielle/Mountain Goats was a rare treat from Alastair, one of the sweetest human beings I have ever met, who values a walk on the beach over a gig any day. Good on yer Alastair Galbraith. ALEC EMPIRE "The Destroyer" (Digital Hardcore Recordings) lp/cd 17.98/18.98 The most intense hardcore jungle you will ever hear! AMERICAN ANALOG SET "The Fun Of Watching Fireworks" (Emperor Jones/Trance) lp/cd 9.98/13.98 Andee recommends the A.A.S.'s brand of sleepy droney synth heavy late night heavy eyelid minimal pop brilliance. ASHTRAY BOY "The Everyman's Fourth Dimension" (Ajax) cd 13.98 Elisabeth likens to "late Nick Cave and Robyn Hitchcock on thorazine - story driven and damn good." ATARI TEENAGE RIOT "Delete Yourself" (Digital Hardcore Recordings) lp/cd 15.98/18.98 Speedfreak hardcore-punk meets techno/jungle, as only Berliners can do it. The Beastie Boy's Grand Royal label will soon release a 7" by this band stateside. When we play this record the kids run to the counter. BAD BRAINS "Black Dots" (Caroline) cd 14.98 1979 demo recording, their first, before the ROIR tape! Wow. BISK "Time" (Sub Rosa) cd 15.98 Intelligent, playful techno from Japan, similar to James Bong and even reminiscent of the latter recordings of Cluster's Roedelius. BLIND ALLEY "The Ruby Kennel Club" (Freek) cd 15.98 Lovely guitar psychedelia sans vocals, consistent with the rest of the excellent Freek (U.K.) roster. Project of a member of Ramleh, by the way. CAT POWER "What Would The Community Think" (Matador) lp/cd 9.98/14.98 The second, and greatly improved, effort from singer/songwriter Chan Marshall, backed again by members of Two Dollar Guitar and Sonic Youth. This album is sad and lonely, soulful and bluesy (and contains fine Smog and Peter Jefferies covers). THE CARDIGANS "First Band On The Moon" (Mercury) cd 15.98 Second album of sugary, female-fronted pop from Sweden. Features a lovely, lovely cover of Black Sabbath's "Iron Man", a follow-up to the equally sweet version of "Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath" included on their debut album. Come down to the store and listen to us play "Iron Man" fifteen times in a row... LOREN MAZZACANE CONNORS "Long Nights" (Table of the Elements) cd 14.98 Gastr del Sol's Jim O'Rourke says: "Outside of Derek Bailey and John Fahey, I've never heard such purity in guitar playing." (from the disc's obi) CREVICE (Seizure) cd 12.98 One long long track of woozy spacy stoner drone outta Texas, varied and quite interesting and beautiful, even without appropriate medication. DESCENDENTS "Everything Sucks" (Epitaph) lp/cd 7.98/12.98 Milo's back, and it's like he never left. "Every 14-year-old punk who just broke up with their boy/girlfriend and had nothing to listen to while they wrote bad poetry and hate/love letters to their ex breathe a collective sigh of relief..." (so says Andee, who once was a 14-year-old punk) DIRECTIONS IN MUSIC "by Bundy K. Brown, Doug Scharin, James Warden." Contains audience favorite, that Greek folk song. DR. DRE "Back 'N The Day" (Blue Dolphin) cd 15.98 Stellar electro from the early days of one of hip hop's superstars! 1/2 original pre-NWA recordings, including the fantastic "Horny Computer", and 1/2 remixes of those tracks and others, mostly by Japanese DJs. Windy's latest love... FLYING SAUCER ATTACK "Live" (Corpus Hermeticum) cd 16.98 (from Forced Exposure update:) "Bristol's FSA have been making waves for some three years now as one of the handful of British outfits worth bothering about in strictly hermetic terms. Their subtle blend of Teutonic space exploration with English folk/rock pastoralism, post-psychedelic consciousness, and (dare-we-say-it) positively Antipodean approach to 'low fidelity' recording tweaked ears at H/Corp HG from the release of their brainbending debut LP Rural Psychedelia...A little bird had already informed us that the band had undertaken a number of 'interesting' improv/utterly formless gigs in 1994, so when the proposal was mooted to compile the highlights of these gigs for a Hermetic CD, celestial joy was boundless. More than just a simple licensing deal, the arrangement was that all the raw analogue cassettes of the 1994 shows would be sent to NZ for appraisal and compilation by H/Corp magus-in-chief, Bruce Russell...about three hours of material was sliced, diced and boiled down to fifty minutes, studio wizardry being used to overlay and blend the various pieces into a seamless symphony of noise, which runs continuously for the entire length of the disc. The result is recognizably FSA, but skewed in such a way that even die-hard fans will be left wondering how the fuck it was done." GOLDEN PALOMINOS "Dead Inside" (Restless) cd 15.98 Anton Fier, Nicole Blackman, Knox Chandler, Bill Laswell, Nicky Skopelitis. PHILIP GREENLIEF & SCOTT AMENDOLA DUO "Collect My Thoughts" (9 Winds) cd 12.98 Sax and percussion improvisation. Lovely. "Inspired by the sand paintings of Viswanadhan."1 KATO HIDEKI "Hope & Despair" (Extreme) cd 14.98 Expatriate Japanese bassist/improviser/composer Kato, with help from Japanese and downtown New York friends including Zeena Parkins and John Zorn (playing piano!). Minimal and moody. HIM "Chill And Peel" (Southern) 12" 7.98 Former Codeine drummer continues his dub project. HOOD "Silent '88" (Slumberland) cd 12.98 Fine U.K. bliss-pop. Ambient sweetness, noisy post-rock ease and home recorded chime - moody. HOTEL X "Uncommon Grounds" (SST) cd 14.98 Fifth album from these electric avant-garage jazz punks. They do originals, as well as tunes by Miles Davis, Sonny Sharrock, and Greg Ginn (who contributes his guitar playing). Bern Nix also guests on several tracks. JAMES BONG "Tres Bong" (2 Kool) 2xlp/cd 17.98/16.98 Groovy experimental old/new school techno trickery from Holland. Buy it. JESSAMINE "The Long Arm Of Coincidence" (Kranky) cd 12.98 LESSER "Excommunicate the Cult of the Live Band" (Vinyl Communications) 12" 7.98 Andee loves Lesser so much he even has a Lesser tattoo. It's on his back. ASK TO SEE!!! A little Oval, a little hip hop, a little Nurse With Wound and even jungle. The perfect Dance record, Aquarius-style = completely undanceable but impossible for yr body to ignore. CHRIS MARS "Anonymous Botch" (Bar None) cd 16.98 ex-Replacements. MARTIN PHILLIPS & THE CHILLS "Sunburnt" (Flying Nun) lp/cd 9.98/13.98 They're not on Slash anymore. Nor are they just The Chills anymore. uh oh. THURSTON MOORE "Please Just Leave Me (my Paul Desmond)" (Pure) cd 10.98 Solo disc on RRR's budget noise label. MORTIIS "Crypt Of The Wizard" (Dark Dungeon Music) cd 16.98 Maybe this latest disc from Emperor member Mortiis should be listed in our Black Metal section, below - but the music Mortiis creates to evoke his trollish fantasy world is more akin to ambient industrial, far from anything with double bass and raspy growls... NEAR CASTLEGAR "In January" ep (Shrimper) cd 7.98 Cute electronica from Justice Schanfarber (aka Pork Queen), with Michael Ledwidge and Jason Zumpano (of Zumpano). NEOTROPIC "15 Levels Of Magnification" (NTone) 2xlp 16.98 Riz Maslen is the woman behind this experimental & minimalist techno outfit. The cd version will be in soon. NIRVANA "From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah" (DGC) lp/cd /14.98 Contains 17 electric live tracks spanning the band's history. Vinyl version features a side of between-song banter of questionable value. NO NECK BLUES BAND "Letters from the Earth" (SER) 2xcd 17.98 LUIGI NONO "La Lontananza Nostalgica Utopica Futura" (Disques Montaigne) cd 17.98 If you liked that popular Xenakis "La Legende d'Eer" item, his equally groundbreaking, seminal contemporary Nono's 1988 piece for violin (operated by Irvine Arditti) and tapes, might be up yr alley. Again, quiet AND noisy. O YUKI CONJUGATE "Primitive" (Staalplaat) cd 12.98 Recordings from 1983 to 1987, some previously unreleased. JOHN PARRISH & POLLY JEAN HARVEY "Dance Hall At Louse Point" (Island) cd 16.98 PHONOCOMB "Fresh Gasoline" (Quarterstick) lp/cd 9.98/13.98 Used to be the Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet, thus instrumental surfy rock, fans of Man or Astroman should dig too. The Ramones and Brian Eno both get covered. ROBERT POLLARD "Not In My Airforce" (Matador) lp/cd 9.98/14.98 TOBIN SPROUT "Carnival Boy" (Matador) lp/cd 9.98/14.98 If you're a Guided By Voices fan, you've probably already bought this, the solo debut from GBV leader Pollard. 22 tracks. Simultaneous with Pollard's project comes a solo album from fellow GBV-er Tobin Sprout. 14 tracks. JAMES PLOTKIN "A Strange, Perplexing" (Indiscreet Music) cd 14.98 More quiet and creepy soundscapes from ambient guitarist Plotkin (of Earache artists OLD). JAMES PLOTKIN & MICK HARRIS "Collapse" (Sombient/Asphodel) cd 15.98 Mick (Scorn, Lull, Painkiller, once-upon-a-time Napalm Death) and Jim (OLD, Scorn) collaborate on this disc to produce some more of the eerie, ominous ambience that they both have become known for. Housed in handsome digipack. PLURAMON "Pick Up Canyon" (Mille Plateaux) lp 17.98 Producer-constructed avant-groove ala Tortoise or Can (whose drummer, Jaki Liebezeit, makes an appearance). Like a cross between Mouse on Mars and Can, Munich is really happening these days, no? CD version expected later this week. RACHEL'S "The Sea And The Bells" (Quarterstick) lp 13.98 Another, eagerly awaited installment of alternative chamber music from Rachel Grimes and numerous friends. The cd will be out on the 22nd. RAILROAD JERK "The Third Rail" (Matador) cd 14.98 A rockin' great new one from NYC combo. RED SNAPPER "Price Blimey" (Warp) lp/cd 15.98/18.98 British band plays (as in conventional instruments) wonderfully funky trip-hop/jungle grooves... Andee is still trying to figure out how they do the jungle beats live. THE RENDERERS "The Surface Of Jupiter" (Ajax) cd 13.98 Whiskey-soaked droll twang a la Mekons or Virgina Dare, & from New Zealand so you know it's good. Touring America in November! RROPE "A Thing Of Beauty Is A Joy Forever" (2star) 2x7" 5.98 SF local art/noise rockers' new handsome-looking double 7" - the fourth side of which is cut to start, randomly skip in the middle of the song, then finish. How about that. SCANNER "Accretions" (Staalplaat) cd 17.98 Robin Rimbaud's eavesdropping electronica, interestingly packaged import. KLAUS SCHULZE "Cyborg" (Spalax) 2xcd 28.00 1973 solo album with the "Cosmic Orchestra" (12 cellos, 3 basses, 30 violins, 4 flutes). Kraut/space zone music, reissued in a double digipak. SERVOTRON "No Room For Humans" (Amphetamine Reptile) cd 13.98 Members of the Man Or Astro-man and Supernova team up for Devo-like project. Robots rock. DJ SHADOW "Endtroducing..." (Mo'Wax) 2xlp/cd 17.98/18.98 Debut from CA's preeminent trip-hop slow-jam DJ. Sex music, especially around track 8 or 9 when it sounds like Shadow got hold of some Goblin records (_Suspiria_ soundtrack or something) and cut up the spooky piano melodies, rearranging single notes to form his own melodies. Did he? Is Shadow into Goblin? We've turned into Trainspotters here, but it's just so delightful that he's dipping into aq-favorites for source material. SHAKUHACHI SURPRISE "Space Streakings Over Mount Shasta" (Skin Graft) picture lp/cd 14.98/13.98 Japanese bpm-terrorists Space Streakings collaborate with Midwestern uglyrockpunks Mount Shasta, kicking out the jams in a East-meets-West noisefest, or a low-rent version of a non-existent Boredoms/Stooges conflict. The LP is a colorful beauty btw. MATTHEW SHIPP DUO WITH ROSCOE MITCHELL (2.13.61) cd 15.98 Free jazz piano/sax duets. Shipp is known for his work with David Ware, as well as a leader or solo, and Mitchell is a member of Chicago's Association for the Advancement of Creaive Music. SIX FINGER SATELLITE "Paranormalized" (Sup Pop) lp/cd 10.98/13.98 Rhode Island's purveyors of devo-death-disco rock return with a new full-length, hot on the wobbly heels of their recent "Clone Theory" 10". SMOG "The Doctor Came At Dawn" (Drag Ditty) lp/cd 9.98/13.98 SOFT MACHINE "Spaced" (Cuneiform) cd 12.98 Early, unreleased Soft Machine, originally recorded for a multimedia art installation, 1969. Thick and even scary. SPECTRUM "Songs For Owsley" (Reprise) cd 11.98 Acid/synth/theremin explorations from ex-Spaceman 3'er Sonic Boom and friends. SQUAREPUSHER "Conumber" (Spymania) 12" 8.98 SUICIDE s/t (Red Star) cd 15.98 Finally available domestically on cd. Classic duo of Alan Vega and Martin Rev. SUN CITY GIRLS "Midnight Cowboys Ipanema" (Amarillo) cd 12.98 Reissue of an lp (which was a reissue of what was originally a cassette). mostly bizarre covers of 70s-era cheesy radio songs like "Me & Mrs. Jones" and "Brandy." SUN RA "The Singles" (Evidence) 2xcd 29.00 Super-rare Sun Ra tracks collected on cd for the first time, accompanied by an authorative 36-page booklet. YO LA TENGO "Genius + Love =" (Matador) 2xlp/2xcd 12.98/16.98 "Over two hours of hard to find and unreleased tracks recorded between 1988-1995." V/A "Chicken Bomb" (Boring Theoretical Productions) cd 8.98 "Lumpen [a zine] Media Group Chicago Compilation #1" -- the likes of Six Finger Satellite, Dog Faced Hermans, Scissor Girls, The Make*Up, Lake of Dracula and many more, all performing live in, yep, Chicago. V/A "Cosmic Kurushi Monsters: Tokyo Invasion Vol. 1" (Virgin) 2xcd 29.00 Much of the best of the current Japanese psych/artrock/improv (not noise!) underground is represented here on this colorful, Savage Pencil-art adorned double cd. These discs will serve as a great introduction for the uninitiated to this very creative scene, or as a primer for the fan of new artists to explore. Includes tracks by Musica Transonic, Ruins, Omoide Hatoba, Keiji Haino, Ground Zero, Kirohito, Optical*8, Shizuka, Kato Hideki, K.K. Null, Fushitsusha, Boredoms, Melt Banana, High Rise, Magical Power Mako, Altered States, Masaki Batoh, etc etc. As with Virgin's "Monsters, Robots and Bugmen" comp which covered US/UK post-rock, the tracks here are pretty much all previously released, but only our very best mail-order customers are likely to have every track already in their collection... V/A "Disco Sucks" (Che) 8x7"box 10.98 Che's split 7" series collected in a box, or in the digital format. Features Tatsuya Yoshida (Ruins), Merzbow, Melt Banana, Def Master, Discordance Axis, Multiplex, etc. V/A "Harder Than The Rest" (Digital Hardcore Recordings) lp/cd 17.98/18.98 A sampler of the Berlin (Munich?) school of noise techno, as exemplified by Atari Teenage Riot and Alec Empire. Distortion and manic beats, jungle terrorism. So amazing. V/A "Joe Meek Presents: 304 Holloway Road" (Sequel) cd 13.98 Another great collection of 60's pop produced by infamous, supremely talented Joe Meek. Twenty tracks, including ditties by The Fabulous Flee Rekkers, Alan Dean & His Problems, and The Joe Meek Orchestra. This is really, really good, and features enough songs not on last year's comp to make it worth your while to find. V/A "Pipeline! Live Boston Rock On WMBR" (Slow River Records) 2xcd 18.98 For a change, compilation from a city other than Chicago. 40 live performances! Morphine, Buffalo Tom, The Queers, Lou Barlow, Helium, The Dambuilders, Come, Roger Miller, and more... V/A "Unknown Deutschland: The Krautrock Archive Volume 1" (Virgin) cd 20.00 Rare tracks from obscure German space bands circa 1973...Golem, Cozmic Corridors, The Astral Army, Galactic Explorers, etc. Are you ready for a trip? V/A "Whore - Various Artists Play Wire" (WMO) cd 15.98 Wire tribute compilation, with quite an amazing variety of bands playing their favorite Wire tunes - from Fudge Tunnel to Main, from My Bloody Valentine to Mike Watt, from Scanner to Godflesh, from Lush to Lee Ranaldo, you get the idea. ----* ----* Ye Olde Black Metal, our latest loves : ----* ABSU "The Sun Of Tipareth" (Osmose Productions) cd 16.98 Evil, epic darkness originating not from cold Nordic wastes, but from the great state of Texas! ANCIENT "The Cainian Chronicle" (Metal Blade) cd 13.98 Domestic release from a Scandinavian band in the vein of Emperor and Dark Tranquility. ATARAXIA "Le Fantisima De Le'Opera" (Avantgarde Music) cd 16.98 On a black metal label, but really pretty far from metal - this Italian band produces a bizarre sort of synth-opera, incorporating a Kate Bush cover, even! MAYHEM "Deathcrush" (Deathlike Silence) cd 17.98 aka "The True Mayhem" - the band of black metal martyr Euronymous, recorded in 1987, back before he became the stabbing victim of Burzum's Count Grishnakh. "Deathcrush" sounds a lot like '80s contemporaries Venom (they do a cover of "Witching Hour"), but more primitive. What's really strange about this disc is that the first track, the avant-electronic "Silvester Anfang", is both composed and recorded by (meaning stolen from) Conrad Schnitzler, of Tangerine Dream fame... MZ.412 "Burning the Temple of God" (Cold Meat Industry) cd 18.98 More on the industrial/ambient side of things, but still interested in face-painting and church-burning. We've also got their previous disc, the suggestively titled "In Nomine Die Nostri Satanas Luciferi Excelsi," in stock... SAMAEL "Passage" (Century Media) cd 15.98 Truly superior satanic cybermetal from this Swiss trio. The keyboards are grand and scary, the percussion is precise and programmed. Plus, they have a great pop sense! Enthralling, and definite AQ-favorite. STORM "Nordavind" (Moonfog) cd 19.98 Black metal super group featuring members of Darkthrone and 3rd And The Mortal. Storm is heavily folk-influenced, resulting in rollicking singalong tunes that make us think: Pirates! WICKED INNOCENCE "Omnipotence" (Napalm Records America) cd 15.98 Advanced death metal from Utah, of all places. Brutal, technical stuff - most notable however for the extreme low grunting abilities of the vocalist, which must be heard to be believed! WINDHAM HELL "Window Of Souls" (Morbibund Records) cd 16.98 2nd disc from this two-man, avant-metal project. Influenced equally by Vivaldi and David Lynch's Twin Peaks (they're from the town where the show was filmed), Windham Hell create an eerie and expertly played black/death/ industrial/classical hybrid. ----* ----* Mr. Bungle-Related Items of Interest to All : ----* SECRET CHIEFS 3 "First Grand Constitution and Bylaws" (Amarillo) cd 12.98 The three secret chiefs are Trevor Dunn, Danny Heifetz, and Trey Spruance. NEIL HAMBURGER "America's Funnyman" (Drag City) lp/cd 8.98/12.98 Stand up comedy record produced by Gregg Turkington and Trey Spruance. V/A "You Gan't Boar Like An Eabla When You Work With Turkrys" (Amarillo) cd 4.98 Budget-priced sampler from the infamous Amarillo label. Check next week for details... Thrilling to see AQ-current favorites chart in The Wire's August issue. Thank you, Wire editors, Rob Young especially. We are slightly embarrassed by our comments in recent issue of AsianWeek, but at least you can laugh at photo of Windy the lipless chinese girl. It was the light, I swear. And furthermore. It has come to my attention that some of you are laboring under the delusion that Windy is male. Ack! I didn't earn that -- that's affirmative action. That's the biggest affirmative action program -- inheritance. And white people cry when they try to give black people a little tiny bit of that in return. The metaphor I use is that we're like a biker with the wind at our backs. We've had the wind at our backs so long that if the bike is turned around even for a few seconds and we have to bike into a headwind for a minute we're like, 'Oh my god, this is so terrible' -- without putting our feet in the shoes of the people who've been biking into the headwind the whole time.
