Happy Holidays from yer pals here at AQ: ----* ----* Record of the Week : ----* THE CHAMPS "III" (Frenetic) cd 10.98 (Double LPs in soon!) San Francisco's Champs (or C4AM95 as they prefer to be called for silly legal reasons) are an amazing two guitars and drums no bass, sometimes three guitars no drums, very rarely any vocals, trio that on this their debut album crank out over seventy minutes of catchy, complex, mostly instrumental metal in indie/math-rock clothing. Kind of like the indie-prog of Don Caballero or Breadwinner, with touches of Trans Am (the bombast and occasional "techno electronica" interlude) ...and healthy helpings of Iron Maiden, Thin Lizzy, Metallica, Carcass, Motley Crue, Priest, etc. I could go on. Mesmerizing live, they're on tour now but will be back soon so I hope y'all went to their shows. For what it's worth, there's a former member of Nation of Ulysses in their ranks. Rec-o-f'n-mended. ----* ----* Selected New Arrivals : ----* MOVIETONE "Day And Night" (Drag City) lp/cd 8.98/12.98 Record of the week runner up! The second album from Movietone (which features Rachel from Flying Saucer Attack) conjures more cinematic references than musical ones...as it could stand in for a soundtrack to a Godard film that was bleached out by Mediterranean sun...a strange reference, but we have no other way of defining the languid acoustic guitars and washed out drones and lovely voice...an amazing record! RICHARD THOMAS "Shoes And Radios Attract Paint" (Lo) cd 16.98 Record of the week second runner up! Extremely appealing, subtle, layered drones beautifully held together with "bleeps and clicks." Lovely, hard-to-describe full-length cd expounding the talent of Mr. Thomas who was featured on the last Lo recordings compilation (so you know it must be good). Unanimous store favorite. Sounds just so "right" -- kind of like the first time you heard Oval or Flying Saucer Attack. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. BEACH BOYS "The Pet Sounds Sessions" (Capitol) 4cd box 57.00 The best record ever? The Beach Boys' best record? Can't stand "The Sloop John B."? This is the way to make up your mind. Any more versions of "Pet Sounds" and you'd die. MODEST MOUSE "Lonesome Crowded West" (Up) cd 13.98 New full length from indie rock sensations of da moment. LABRADFORD "Mi Media Naranja" (Kranky) lp/cd 8.98/13.98 This new record, their fourth, is way melodic, very nice. MAGNOG "More Weather" (Kranky) 2xcd 15.98 Pacific NW space-rock band's home-recorded demos, '94-'96 or so, taking up two compact discs. Jessamine Jr.? WYATT RIOT #1 ("Virgin Cruise") WYATT RIOT #2 ("Super Secret Second Edition") zine 1.00 This is the funniest zine to come down the wire in a very long time. Owen is obsessed (uh, in a good way) with Wyatt, singer from local favorites Track Star. Owen wrote the first issue as a kind of tongue-in-cheek yet worshipful tribute to Wyatt. It's full of "fun facts" ("Wyatt has Superman sheets!") and fantasies and stuff, handwritten and very sweet. Then Wyatt found out and Owen got a little embarassed... so he published a second issue! Nonetheless, Owen wants everyone to know he's not a stalker. BANANAFISH #12 magazine+cd 7.98 Hallelujah, another issue of the most esoteric music magazine out there. Neil Hamburger (hilarious tour diary), Monde Bruits, Climax Golden Twins, Iancu Dumitrescu, Sufi Mind Game, Crank Sturgeon, Stillupsteypa, etc... all featured in the mag as well as on the accompanying cd. MOUSE ON MARS "Twift" (Our Choice) cdep 9.98 These German electronic music wonders follow up their recent "Autoditaker" full-length with this import four-track single, which includes a remix by (yes, BY) the High Llamas. Those of you who saw Mouse on Mars open for Sterolab last week will know what we mean when we say these 2 guys (one of whom is also involved with Microstoria) harbor a deep appreciation for all genres of electronic musics, past and present, as evidenced by their set's subtle, proficient, chronological progression from electro to house to drum'n'bass. So smart. Head and shoulders above the rest. MOUSE ON MARS "Instrumentals" (Thrill Jockey) 12" 9.99 Vinyl-only recording made especially for Mouse on Mars to sell while on tour, we've got a few left. SHIZUO "New Kick" (DHR) 12"/cdep 8.98/9.98 One of our favorites from Alec Empire's Digital Hardcore stable, with a new ep the title track of which is apparently a Cramps cover... Oh, and hey, Grand Royal asked us to put up a ballot box for a pair of tickets to the big Shizuo/Atari Teenage Riot/EC8OR show (Slims, Dec 12), so come on in and sign up. We'll draw the winning ballot a few days before the show. PATRIC CATANI "Snuff Out" (DHR) 12"/cdep 8.98/9.98 Another Digital Hardcore militant, better known for his work with EC8OR. V/A "Riot Zone" (DHR) lp/cd 17.98/21.00 From Atari Teenage Riot's furious electro-punk to Christoph de Babalon's glacial darkness, "Riot Zone" is features Digital Hardcore's "greatest hits" so far. Along with the aforementioned acts, you get Shizuo, Hanin Elias, Alec Empire, Ec8or, Bomb20, and Patric Catani. DHR-heads will have some of this already, but unless you've got all the 12" vinyl this is still essential. And of course it features a manic neo-situationist manifesto from Mr. Empire. ALEC EMPIRE "Geist of Alec Empire" (Geist Ltd.) dbl. cd 27.00 Marking the end of his dealings with Mille Plateaux, "Geist" collects the best tracks from those albums, compilation appearances, and unreleased tracks. No digital hardcore...rather electronica, odd hip hop and musique concrete. OUTPUNK #7 zine 2.00 Those of you who are really into Digital Hardcore stuff should check out the swan song issue of Matt Wobensmith's brilliant Outpunk magazine (also found at http://www.sirius.com/~corps). A lofi digital visionary (the table of contents is a screen shot of his desktop), Matt is at the forefront of much that is exciting and vital and important, and his enthusiasm comes across well in this zine, where he writes not only about the state of punk (not) and queercore and infuses it all with so much righteous and politically-aware ENERGY, but also writes REVIEWS THAT ARE ACTUALLY WORTH READING (geez when was the last time you read every review in a zine? You'll want to in Outpunk.) His DHC reviews are especially fresh (Shizuo has a penis pump!) Future projects for Matt include (now that Outpunk the label and zine are dead) a new publication and label, both called Queercorps, which will highlight issues and artists from queer and electronic/hip hop scenes, including the first records by lesbian hip hopper Cyryus. Issues of Queercorps will include FLOPPY DISCS with music files, yay Matt! GROUND ZERO "Plays Standards" (Nani Records) cd 18.98 Finally in stock, the last ever album from Otomo Yoshihide's amazing sampling/noise/jazz outfit Ground Zero (except for the forthcoming all-remixes disc)...and this one's all covers, Ground Zero interpretations of tunes as far ranging as Massacre's "Bones" to John Philip Sousa's "Washington Post March", Omoide Hatoba to Burt Bacharach... Includes liner notes in both English and Japanese explaining Otomo's reasons for doing each song. Great album, great band. RESTGERAEUSCH "Vol.2 2x30min.30sec." (Mille Plateaux) lp/cd 11.98/15.98 Dark drone w/ hidden hip-hop beats experimentation, maybe not quite as good as their first ("Vol. 1 1hr.1min.") but still excellent and not like anything else...the first half hour thirty seconds has the buried beats under the noise, the second half goes fully ambient. GUILLOTINE KYODAI "Viva Guitar" (Creativeman Disc) cd 17.98 Japanese avant-rock duo Guillotine Kyodai enlist a who's who of underground Japanese experimental guitarists to play a kind of "pass it along" game: each track features two guitarists dueting on an initial theme, which mutates as it is passed from guitarist to guitarist. Axemen include members of Ground Zero, Boredoms, Melt Banana, Solmania, Optical*8, Altered States, Bondage Fruit, and Kirihito. Not only conceptually interesting, this is good listening and probably essential to anyone who owns more than two records by the bands listed above. THE FLYING LUTTENBACHERS "Gods of Chaos" (Skin Graft) cd 13.98 New one from the Chicago jazz-grind band that used to boast reedsmen Hal Russell and Ken Vandermark in their ranks, slimmed down to a trio led by drummer Weasel Walter (also of Lake of Dracula and Hatewave). They kind of go for a no-wave meets black metal image, and are probably equally influenced by the music of Albert Ayler and Norway's Immortal... ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS/UNIVERSAL INDIANS "Blues For Black Afternoon/Blues For Nervous System" (American Tapes) split cd 10.98 Michigan's Universal Indians (who you may remember from their handsome split lp with Gravitar) and Scotland's Ashtray Navigations (known for their tapes) combine on this split cd, both bands being purveyors of murky psych/noise guitar improv splurge. Pretty cool, the packaging is crap though... CORRUPTED "Paso Inferior" (Frigidity Discos) cd 16.98 Japanese crust-sludge band, super slow, super heavy. Their new disc. Some facts: 1) they just toured the States. 2) their lyrics are all sung in Spanish. 3) the drummer used to be in Omoide Hatoba, Boredoms guitarist Yamamoto's weird jazz/pop project, but he quit when Omoide signed to a major. 4) this album features only one song, it's 40+ minutes long... Great vegging-out music for fans of Earth, Sleep, Eyehategod, Swans, etc. V/A "Major Force" (Mo'Wax) 2xcd box 33.00 Another beautifully packaged limited edition double cd from this great label. This time going back to the late '80s to uncover Major Force, who kick out "dope up cyber-rap from Tokyo." 32 tracks in all. CONGO NORVELL "Abnormals Anonymous" (Jetset) cd 12.98 New, noirish disc with guest vocalist Mark Eitzel! MAYHEM "Wolf's Lair Abyss" (Misanthropy) 12"/cdep 13.98/13.98 One of Nordic black metal's most legendary, infamous bands returns with a brutal new recording featuring new members replacing various deceased ones. Euronymous (R.I.P.) would be proud, though perhaps not happy that his band is now on the same label that releases the albums of that guy that killed him... PRIMORDIAL UNDERMIND "You And Me And The Continuum" (Camera Obscura) cd 14.98 THREE MILE PILOT "Another Desert Another Sea" (Headhunter) cd 12.98 The record that got this San Diego band dropped from Geffen! Lush, bass-heavy, piano driven epics, w/ definite Supertramp influence! THE DEVIANTS "Ptooff!" (Get Back) lp 9.99 Italian vinyl-only reissue of Mick Farren's 1968 pre-Pink Fairies psych-proto-punk band's best-loved album. PIZZICATO 5 "Remix Series Volume 5" (Matador) 12" 5.98 John "Plunderphonics" Oswald and Oval take a stab at it. FLOWCHART "Cumulus Mood Twang" (Carrot Top) lp/cd 11.98/13.98 DISSECTION "The Past Is Alive: The Early Mischief" (Necropolis) picture disc lp 15.98 The best Swedish death/black metal band's demos and rarities, cd format soon. V/A "Decay" (Ash International) cd 14.98 Third in Ash's three-part series of international sound sculpture/drone/electronic comps, this installment features European artists like AQ-fave Panacea, Mego's Fennesz, Noto, Francisco Lopez, and more. Abstract techno rubs goatees with minimalist noise. LAILA AMEZIAN "Initial" (Siesta) cd 13.98 Very pleasant jazz vocals with a bossa nova bent. With some interesting guests including Sean O'Hagan (High Llamas) and Stuart Moxham (Young Marble Giants). V/A "Disco Moonlight" (Worm Interface) cd 16.98 Compiled and released by Rockit @ Ambient Soho (one of London's best electronica shops), "Disco Moonlight" is a fantastic comp with unreleased tracks from Tom "Squarepusher" Jenkinson, Freeform, Farmer's Manual, David Kristian, Dunderhead, and more! HARMONIA 76 "Tracks & Traces" (Ryko) cd 15.98 Wow! Long-lost (or neglected) tapes starring electronic krautrock luminaries Moebius and Roedelius (of Cluster) and Michael Rother (of Neu!), and Brian Eno! V/A "GUMMO" original soundtrack (London) cd 14.98 Soundtrack to Harmony "Kids" Korine's controversial new film "Gummo," featuring much in the way of underground black/noise/death/doom metal sounds, some of them previously unreleased. Some names: Spazz, Absu, Bathory, Burzum, Eyehategod, Brujeria, Sleep, Destroy All Monsters, Namanax and more. Oh yeah, AQ-pal and CMJ metal scribe Ian Christe's Dark Noerd (black metal breakbeat band) appears, and Ian's smart musical aesthetic basically sets the tone for the whole collection. Now the question is, will "Gummo" do for any of these bands what "Kids" did for the Folk Implosion? DUMBO original soundtrack (Disney) cd 15.98 Remastered and on cd for the first time. One of the best soundtracks in Disney history. Playful, silly, beautiful and sad, from the heartbreaking "Baby Mine" to the wacky and rambunctious "When I See An Elephant Fly." Highly recommended. KEN BUTLER "Voices of Anxious Objects" (Tzadik) cd 15.98 In Tzadik's "Lunatic Fringe" series, hybrid instrument creator and composer Ken Butler! Strangely klezmery. (Mr. Butler was featured in the "Gravikords..." unusual invented instruments book and cd.) MOGWAI "Young Team" (Jetset) cd 12.98 From Scotland, super blissed-out meandering Slintish almost-ambient soundscapes...dark brooding passages of near silence, shattered by bursts of frenzied, rhythmic noise ala Godflesh, yet strangely melodic and almost catchy. AERIAL M "M Is..." (Drag City) cdep 4.98 David Pajo (Slint...Tortoise), new ep of beautiful post-rock guitar. Two mellow songs. JACKSON POLLOCK & LEE KRASNER "Two Dialogues" (Soo) cd 15.98 Pollock and Krasner were a couple, they lived in a house on Long Island and made paintings we hang in museums. This is a recording of them talking with William Wright (1950) and Marc Miller (1982), respectively. And you know it's got a nice cover. MIKA VAINIO "Onko" (Touch) cd 15.98 Mika of Panasonic's solo album, almost an hour of squeaks, subsonic rumbles, ear piercing whistles and barely audible drones. Either your favorite record of the year or you couldn't care less... ALEC EMPIRE "Squeeze The Trigger" (DHR) lp/cd /21.00 Sundries previously released on 12" 1994-1996. Killer digital hardcore rap techno. TINDERSTICKS "Nenette et Boni" (Bar None) cd 15.98 Finally a domestic re-issue of this Tinderticks soundtrack to Claire Denis' French film about Nenette and Boni. V/A "Angelfood Electronics Volumes 1 and 2" (Kake Mix) cd 12.98 Drone space-rock collection, two previously vinyl-only releases on one handy cd, with: Flowchart, Azusa Plane, Windy & Carl, Amp, Magnog, Hood and more... Too bad there's no colored vinyl to look at, but the music is still gorgeous. FENNESZ "Hotel Parallel" (Mego) cd 16.98 Mego can do no wrong, Austrian abstract electronic music rules! V/A "Little Darla Has A Treat For You Vol. 8" (Darla) cd 5.98 Yay, another comp of that Darla pop/blissout/etc. With Holland, Momus, Caio Bella, Mirza, Flowchart, Orange Cake Mix, many others. HARRY PARTCH "Collection Volume 1" HARRY PARTCH "Collection Volume 2" HARRY PARTCH "Collection Volume 3" HARRY PARTCH "Collection Volume 4" (Composers Recordings Inc.) cd 17.98 each Musical iconoclast, unique instrument builder, microtonal enthusiast and important writer on music and acoustic theory. Four cd release of historic recordings, supervised and/or performed by the composer, using hand built instruments under the direction of Partch. His concept of 'corporeality' made it mandatory to move/dance while playing. Some pieces involve musical theater, found texts, some Greek mythology as their basis and some are film scores. Partch is a towering figure in micro-tuning and, like Ives, a fiesty anti "Euro- tradition" AMERICAN classical composer. V/A "Driftworks" (Big Cat) 4xcd box 28.00 So lovely, a disc apiece from international drone-meisters Paul Schutze, Pauline Oliveros & Randy Raine-Reusch, Thomas Koner, and Nijiumu (Keiji Haino). DUSTY SPRINGFIELD "Anthology" (Mercury) 3xcd 48.00 Deluxe 77-track career retrospective. V/A "Release Your Mind Volume 2" (Release) 3xcd 18.98 Slighty cheaper than the Dusty Springfield set above, here's 32 exclusive tracks of the nastiest noise and experimental ambience from around the world, by the likes of Runzelstirn & Gurgelstock, Tactile, Bastard Noise, Tribes of Neurot, Amber Asylum, Masonna, Illusion of Safety, etc. etc. etc. HIJOKAIDAN "Noise From Trading Cards" (Alchemy) cd 18.98 The self-described King of Noise (and sports-card shop owner) returns with a new blast of, um, noise. Other participants include members of fellow Japanese noise royalty Merzbow (on drums) and Incapacitants...and there's one track recorded live here in San Francisco by the way. ARCANA "Arc of the Testimony" (Axiom) cd 15.98 Second installment of Arcana's all-star "futuristic energy music" as masterminded by Bill Laswell, featuring the drumming of the late Tony Williams. Also with Pharoah Sanders, Buckethead, Nicky Skopelitis, Graham Haynes, and Byard Lancaster. DAVID DOUGLAS "Stargazer" (Arabesque Recordings) cd 15.98 "Music by and for Wayne Shorter" featuring John Zorn's Masada members trumpeter Douglas and drummer Joey Baron, along with Chris Speed, Joshua Roseman, Uri Caine, and James Genus. HANATARASH "5" (Shock City/Polystar) cd 25.00 Colorfully packaged, long-awaited new album from Eye of the Boredoms infamous solo noise project. Unlike the violent noise and/or musical collage of prior Hanatarash recordings, "5" is one long whooshing track that sounds like a rocket blasting off, speeding up, entering hyperspace, slowing down, speeding up again, then spiralling off through another galaxy. Relentless and beautiful. OTOMO YOSHIHIDE "Sound Factory: Memory Disorder vol. 3" (Gentle Giant) lp/cd /13.98 Two twenty minute pieces for turntables, mixer and hard disk recorder, by the leader of Japanese jazz/noise/sampling outfit Ground Zero. Amazing cut-up symphonies of parts and particles of hundreds of impossible to recognize sound sources: cartoon music to car alarms to straight ear-splitting noise. KAZUYUKI K. NULL "Invisible Disaster" (Black Hole) cd 17.98 Solo electric guitar improv noise by Zeni Geva's Null, live in Australia. ARCON 2 s/t (Reinforced Records) lp/cd 19.98/22.00 Arcon 2 is the darker pseudonym for Reinforced's Leon Mar. His debut album as A2, moves steadily from jazzed out drum & bass, to fierce darkcore, much in line with No U-Turn and Chrome. Fans of Ed Rush and Panacea take note. V/A "Position Chrome" (Chrome/Force Inc.) cd 15.98 Chrome records (the drum & bass subsidiary of Force Inc./Mille Plateaux) has set itself a course to out darken Ed Rush and No U-Turn. Stalking explosive breaks, every beat and drone drenched with teutonic menace...w/ Panacea, Problem Child, Goner and Heinrich at Hart. JOEL R.L. PHELPS/DOWNER TRIO s/t (Pacifico) cd 8.98 Joel (ex of Silkworm) has the kind of voice that breaks your heart no matter what he's singing about. A new 5-song (with an unlisted sixth track!) ep of beautiful sad songs, including a bare bones piano-and-voice version of the Clash's "Guns of Brixton." SQUAREPUSHER "Burningn'n tree" (Warp) lp/cd 17.98/19.98 Yet another example of why Tom Jenkinson is one of the most creative musicians in drum & bass. This album compiles all the old Spymania (Jenkinson's label) 12" singles and compilation tracks, plus 3 unreleased tracks. More jazzy than the newer stuff, but still peppered with the most illogical and manic beats around. SOURCE DIRECT "Controlled Developments" (Astralwerks) cd 11.98 The first three major label 12"s collected on one cd. Very dark and sparse drum & bass. Fans of Photek will love this (in fact the 12"s were originally released on Photek's Science label). ULTRAMAGNETIC MCS "B Sides" (Next Plateau) lp/cd 8.98/15.98 Great remixes, including some '97 versions incorporating relatively new skool Dr. Octagon samples into old skool UMC favorites. V/A "Avantgardism 2" (Law and Auder) cd 23.00 The second volume of Law and Auder's sampling of experimental electronica and drum & bass. Includes Plug, Black dog, Bowling Green, Muslimgauze, an amazing Witchman remix, and tons more. (we still have volume one in stock which features Tpower, Squarepusher, Plug, Wagonchrist/Aphex Twin and more) JOYCE "The Essential Joyce 1970-1996" (Mr. Bongo) lp/cd 12.98/15.98 In the last edition of the Wire, while listening to records for the Invisible Jukebox, Stereolab mistook Joyce for AQ-favorites Os Mutantes. Like Os Mutantes, this brazillian songstress fuses american psychadelia with traditional Brazillian folk music and ends up sounding like a folkier, more soothing Os Mutantes. DEERHOOF "The man, the king, the girl" (Kill Rock Stars) cd 11.98 Amazing blend of Caroliner sludge, and Melvins slop from this local groop. (Includes members of the late great Nitre Pit.) MUMIA ABU JAMAL/MAN IS THE BASTARD split cd (Alternative Tentacles) lp/cd 7.98/10.98 Ultra PC "kick in the balls" to indie kid complacency. Mumia, accused of killing a cop, speaks from his cell on death row. MITB add their two cents by bashing in your skull with a two-bass-and-drums hash-induced 4 song assault. PC, my ass. (Includes contributions from Allen Ginsberg, Jello Biafra, Assata Shakur, and Bob Dole. Really.) LESSER "Welcome to the American Experience" (Vinyl Com.) 12" 7.98 One of our favorite electronic musicians, Mr. Lesser makes his last foray into drum'n'bass and boy, what a way to go. Imagine Nico or Ed Rush spinning a mix of Merzbow, They Might Be Giants, Alec Empire, and DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince and you might be getting close. Song title of the week: "Markus Popp can kiss my redneck ass." Easily one of the best drum'n'bass 12"s of the last year. BOB OSTERTAG "Like A Melody, No Bitterness" (My Very Own Record Label) cd 14.98 SF sampling keyboard improviser and composer Ostertag's new, noisy solo disc (volume one). MAZK "Sound Pressure Level" (Or) cd 14.98 After years of silence, Zbigniew Karkowski (former Hafler Trio collaborator) joins Masami Akita (of Merzbow, who knows nothing about years of silence) for 55 minutes of signature Merzbow noise processed into heavy chugging pulses and brutal psycho-acoustic drones...not for the faint of heart. GOTHIC ARCHIES "The New Despair" (Merge) cdep 8.98 Another wonderful new project by songwriter Stephin Merritt of the Magnetic Fields. CROM-TECH (Gravity) cd 7.98 Super weird alien spazz-core, like a no-wave Drop Dead, with "skronk" level set to kill. HIS NAME IS ALIVE "Nice Day" (4AD) cdep 6.50 More mature pop from the talented Warren Defever and co., as opposed to the crystal sweetness of their earlier stuff. Detroit soul influenced... A KOMBI "Music To Drive By" (Dual Plover) cd 14.98 As featured in the latest Bananafish magazine, this Australian artist created this cd using only the sounds made by a Volkswagen. V/A "The Freestyle Files Special Edition: Underground Sounds of America" (Studio K7) cd 15.98 New all-American installment in this electronica compilation series, with contributions from Yankees like Tipsy, DJ Spooky, Sub Dub, DJ Wally, Thievery Corporation and others. Studio K7, by the way, is Kruder and Dorfmeister's new domestic imprint, so it's all stuff they like. EIN HEIT "The Lightning And The Sun" (Temporary Freedom) cd 10.98 Silkworm hooks back up with ex-member and solo star Joel Phelps, changing the band name back to what they were called before they were Silkworm, and record a brand-new disc. Who woulda thunk it etc. FRANCIS DHOMONT "Frankenstein Symphony" (Asphodel) cd 15.98 Modern classical composer's cut-up collage utilizing his students' pieces. HOLLAND "Your Orgasm" (Darla) cd 12.98 New on the lovely Darla label, Holland features the singer of Tsunami fronting a synth-based seventies pop-sounding band. SUN CITY GIRLS "Valentines From Matahari" (Majora) cd 12.98 Finally a cd reissue of this excellent SCG improv-splatter elpee. 764-HERO "We're Solids" (Up/Suicide Squeeze) cd 8.98 On tour with Modest Mouse, fellow Pacific Northwest pop heroes. LOW "songs For A Dead Pilot" (Kranky) lp/cd 8.98/11.98 Low's first outing on Kranky is even more sparse than their Vernon Yard recordings...the gaping spaces in between the desolate notes create an ominous (at times...) atmosphere. CAVITY "Somewhere Between The Train Station...And The Dumping Grounds" (Rhetoric Records) cd 11.98 2nd disc of downer doompunk from this Florida band. ********************************************************************** This issue of the Aquarius Records New Arrivals list has one million subscribers. Well, let me tell you.... It's a descriptive term, a nonexistent group (see also 'grunge'). I never invented it, never created it, only usurped it. And if you disagree with my definitions, I don't care. Don't kiss my ass. I don't care what you do or what you call it. Just make your own shit. Make it real. You CAN do it. And please do a better job than me. "Five or six years ago, we thought queer rock music was queercore. And it was. But what was cutting-edge and/or provocative and/or exciting isn't necessarily so anymore. Listen: gay culture is disgusting, boring, pathetic, self-hating and middle-of-the-road. So 'queercore', for me, must always remain on the edge. Somewhere along the way, people have forgotten what makes us outsiders. Fitting in doesn't mean anything has changed. "Dig up Harvey Milk and put a few more bullets into his skull. He's deader than Lady Di. WAKE UP! Death to your complacency. And let's have a big rainbow salute to Andrew Cunanan, the only hero gay people have produced so far this decade. Don't be afraid to kill your own - especially when you know their evil all too well." --Matt Wobensmith in Outpunk #7 Love, windy allan andee byram elisabeth jim **********************************************************************
