Beloved Customers: Happy Rainy Season. See the Notes section for a sad piece about Simeon from Silver Apples, who was soon after being reunited with his original bandmate, Danny Taylor, was involved in a serious car accident, and is now partially paralyzed. Our best wishes go out to Simeon and his companions. GET WELL SOON! Upcoming events include an instore one week from now by SCARNELLA, otherwise knon as Carla Bozulich of Geraldine Fibbers, and recent Fibber addition Nels Cline, otherwise known as one of AQ's favorite guitar gods. Tuesday December 1 at 7pm (call us to confirm the time: 647-2272). Free! Following that, you can look forward to an instore on Thursday December 10th by Philadelphia's amazing rock-jazz instrumental trio Stinking Lizaveta (their second time doing an instore for us!) You have our smart Jim Haynes to thank for most of the reviews in this issue of the New Arrivals list. Thank you, Jim. In this issue: red dot New Arrivals red dot Printed Matter red dot News red dot Tickets For Sale/Recommended Shows ----* ----* Unanimous Favorite Record of the Week : ----* BOREDOMS "Super AE" (Birdman) cd 13.98 The domestic version of this kick ass Boredoms album finally sees the light of day! Far less manic than their previous spazzcore albums you loved in the past, the Boredoms' new focus on studio manipulations is intense and artistically successful. Layers of bombastic guitar noises swell and give way to insane bursts of tape manipulation along with the wax and wane of desperate screams and urgent percussion. "Super AE" is a rancid psychedelic experience that could be a chance meeting on the dissecting table between Amon Duul and Nurse With Wound. If you've seen the Boredoms live and don't think you could sit through a disc of it, know that this album builds on the studio experiments of their recent SuperRoots series; it's not Yamantaka Eye jumping around anymore -- he's sitting in the cock-pit, entering your earholes with intents to purple-shag-carpet-bomb your sense of reality. Mad Jack became mad scientist. Although Japanese import version came packaged in an elaborate day-glo oversized plastic box, don't worry: the artwork on this domestic cd is pretty damn cool complete with nifty Eye Yamantaka magic marker art! ----* ----* Selected New Arrivals : ----* GILBERTO GIL "Cerebro Eletronico" (Philips Japan) cd 19.98 WONDERUL! Japanese-only reissue of the third Gil album (also known as the self titled Gilberto Gil album), originally issued by Brazilian Polydor in 1969. Mutantes fans hungering for more should not skip this gem, and who knows how long it will be available to us so buy now or cry later. "Every bit as in the zone as Gal's epochal '69 testament; musta been something in the Bahian water that year! The Brazilian military dictatorship of the time didn't know what the fuck to make of these records, but they knew they were plenty subversive & placed Gilberto & Caetano Veloso (don't sleep on his '69 White Album either, even though it's never been as hard to find as these two) under house arrest before exiling them for several years. Lanny, again, provides some of the most psychedelic guitarwork the world has ever known & studio wiz Rogerio Duprat outdoes himself on the almost-Dockstadteresque 'Objeto Semi-Identificado'. There's even a Mutantes cover ('2001' or 'Dois Mil e Uno') which out-freaks the original! ... This was Gil's third album, and second in the Tropicülist style. I've yet to hear a bad one from him..." -- Tropicalia expert Jason Witherspoon in the Forced Exposure catalog (www.forcedexposure.com) GATE "The Lavender Head" (Hell's Half Halo) 2xlp 15.98 Mistakenly labelled Gate's 'techno record' by an unnamed party, this is Dead C guitarist Michael Morley's first computer generated album. While most computer programmers are trapped within the crystal purity of digital sounds, Morley's penchant for a fidelity below the standards of lo-fi has saved his 'techno record' from sounding like one. Lazy looping soundtracks for dirgy guitars and sloppy synths. Only about 1/2 of it has got 'beats', and they are pleasant. PRINCE CHARMING "Fantastic Voyage" (WordSound) cd 14.98 Subtitled "A short treatise on the strange occurences of Janucember 69th in the year 00", this album might fool you into thinking it's hyperactive hip hop ridiculosity in the style of Dr. Octagon. And while the lyrics can descend to the point that a narrator is talking about sniffing Rush in high school, the music is thrilling. Deep dub bass rumbles, layers of clanging and waves of intensity -- your regular mindfuck stuff for those of you ready to explore the outer bounds of dub/hiphop experimentation. This is one of the best albums our new favorite label WordSound has yet released, and we highly recommend it. V/A "Blip, Bleep (Soundtracks to Imaginary Videogames)" cd 14.98 Completely charming compilation of soundtracks to imaginary video games! Yes it is as good as it sounds, very intense yet harmless and fun at the same time. Besides the music, the best part of the package is the descriptions of the games, truly stuff worthy of Kool Keith's crazy brain, for example: "FAMILY TREE POLO: Bounce through time in your ambulance. Save your injury prone ancestors so you may eventually be born." For full game descriptions, see www.luckykitchen.com. Features contributions from: Nick Birmingham & Daniel Beattie (UK, Hot Air/Spymania), V/VM (Manchester UK), Soundcard (UK, Spymania), Colongib, Egghatcher, Jake Mandell (Worm Interface), Personal Electronics, Tim Kotch, Marumari, Blitter vs. Hrvatski (Reckankreuzungsklankewerkzeuge), Flexible Products, Aerospace, Flatline Racing System, Stupid Lepton, Wheaton Research, Suetsu & Underwood, Underwood. Crucial underground electronic scenarios, charmingly packaged in a perversely non-video-game-aesthetic hand-sewn felt envelope. Limited to 746 numbered copies. A contender for "album of the week". SQUAREPUSHER "Music Is Rotted One Note" (Nothing / Warp) cd 15.98 It states quite clearly on the sticker Nothing applied to the outside of this record, that this is Jazz. Mr. Jenkinson has reinvented his approach to music, having more in common with Miles Davis' "Dark Magus" or even "On the Corner" than with the drill & bass excesses of his previous outings. No drum programming... instead, complex ever shifting live percussion with hammond organ and fretless bass. Either you'll love it or hate it--some here feel that this is possibly Squarepusher's best release yet. Q-BERT "Wave Twisters" (Galactic Butt Hair) cd/lp 15.98/18.98 The first proper album from the mad scientist of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz is "a trans-galactic deconstructed symphony of head-wringing turntablist godliness with booty-bruisin' beats commucnicated via microcosmic creatures hidden deep within the grooves. Layered in vinyl generated sound collages, samples, and of course Q-Bert's unequaled skratch style, it's an orgasmically dental fresh hip-hop sound explosion of the first order!" MATMOS "The West" (Vague Terrain/Deluxe) 12" 8.98 The first piece of vinyl from Mission electronica heroes Matmos! "The West" itself is a masterful construction of arid Morricone style soundtracks juxtaposed with groovy breakbeats that effortlessly shift between Skam-ish angularity and dancefloor grooves. Don't worry, the three tracks on the flipside are just as good, with heady electro nods and sublime little melodies. Beautifully engraved packaging by Rex Ray very similar to what Independent Project Press has done! Not to appear on compact disc. OLIVIA TREMOR CONTROL "Hideaway" (V2/Flydaddy/Blue Rose) cd/12" 6.98/6.98 Finally! A new Olivia Tremor Control release! Three tracks: one is a bubblegum psychedelic pop gem chock full of lovely Beach Boys inspired harmonies that flow in and out of their hurdy gurdy and violin generated ambience, one an experimental droney piece, and one live version of a song from their first album. The title track is a precursor to the forthcoming album "Black Foliage Animation" (not out until January) while the additional tracks will only appear on this single. BONNIE 'PRINC' BILLY "One With The Birds" (Palace) 7" 3.99 A quietly-released single that is only being offered direct to stores (bypassing distros) at this time, this is the second Bonnie Princ Billy single from Will Oldham and company. Like the one before it (which we still have a few copies of), this is Oldham in a less abject, less stark phase, very pleasant to the ears. Buy now or cry later! THE COUP "Steal This Album" (Dogday) cd 13.98 Highly anticipated work from Bay Area rappers. Lp format soon to follow. V/A "Cue's Hip Hop Shop" (Dogday) 2xlp/cd 12.98/13.98 Cue's, a hip hop retail shop on Mission Street in Daly City, has released this comp featuring many of the most happening names in local (and national!) turntablism and rap, including: the X-Ecutioners' Rob Swift, Rasco, Kut Masta Kurt, Beat Junkies' Roc Raida, Mr Dibbs, and 3 of the Skratch Piklz. SCARNELLA "s/t" (Smells Like Records) cd 12.98 Working apart from the Geraldine Fibbers, Carla Bozulich and AQ-favourite guitarist Nels Cline team up as Scarnella. Slow building intense walls of droning guitar strum not unlike late period Swans and lilting ballads that wouldn't be out of place in a German cabaret. PLAYING INSTORE AT AQ Tuesday December 1 at 7pm (call us to confirm the time: 647 2272). YOU ARE INVITED. JOHN CALLAGHAN "Im Not Comfortable Inside My Mind" (Warp) 7" 5.50 Another indiepop venture for the UK label otherwise known for innovative elctronica releases. This is dark electronics fused with twee pop sentiments, for fans of Broadcast or Smog. V/A "You've Got the Fucking Power" (DHR) cd 1.98 Yes, one dollar and ninety-eight cents, this is a budget priced Digital Hardcore sampler indeedio. It's all previously released stuff, some harder to find tho (like the Christophe de Babalon track from an early, out-of-print DHR 12") but regardless, this is a good DHR sampler that's fast, cheap, and out of control. I AM SPOONBENDER "Sender / Receiver" (Bottleneck) cd 11.98 The debut album from the San Francisco avantgardists I Am Spoonbender is quite a brilliant fare, in which the telephone operates as metaphor to semiological, aural, and sidereal transmissions (Andee's interpretation: "They sing into phones"). But this object finds itself in need of repair, disrupting and misinterpreting the original signals of This Heat and Gary Numan into mutant grooves propelled by Dustin's post-Jaki Leibezeit percussion and Brian's prog bass angularity. On top of all of this rhythmic disruption, Cup's delicate synth melodies fall somewhere in between the tropes of early 80's new wave and Nurse With Wound's "Soliloquy for Lilith." Yeah, I already run the risk of making this review far more advanced than it really need be, so I say that this - the aural equivalent of Avital Ronell's "Telephone Book" - is one of my favorite records of the year. No shit. YOU FANTASTIC "Homesickness" (Skin Graft) cd 13.98 A band that uses the X-Acto blade as much as the guitar, You Fantastic extends the musique concrete / punk fusions of This Heat. This Chicago trio melds mutant hardcore (which is not hard to imagine as You Fantastic member Darin Grey was in Dazzling Killmen when they were functioning), trumpet freakouts, and self-referential explications of the recording process of this album. Also for fans of Village of Savoonga. One of the best records to come out of Chicago in a very long time! V/A "Cocktail Event" (Staalplaat) cd 17.98 Something tells me that the Dutch experimental geniuses at Staalplaat wants this to be deemed an exotic album to be placed next to Martin Denny and Joe Meek. Well the first track - an odd big band arrangement of The KLF's "What Time Is Love" - may very well fit the bill, but the rest of the album features the Fluxus vocalizations of Jaap Blonk, the Icelandic minimalist weirdness from Stillupsteypa, the scraping noise of CoC Casper & Daniel Menche, and the digital bleeps of Pita & Mika Vainio (Mego / Sahko). BIOSPHERE / DEATHPROD "Nordheim Transformed" (Rune Gramafone) cd 14.98 Using the recently reissued electro-acoustic masterpiece "Electric" by Arne Nordheim as the sole source material, Biosphere's and Deathprod's remixes are ice-laden, mesmerizing abstractions of sweeping electronic darkness. CHICAGO UNDERGROUND DUO "12 Degrees of Freedom" (Thrill Josckey) cd 13.98 "Some serious gas-baby free-flowing jazz action from long playing hepsters Chad Taylor and Rob Mazurek of ISOTOPE 217. Drums, vibes, cornet, piano, and bamboo flute are the tools to tap the influence of one force. Guest help from Jeff Parker (TORTOISE/ISOTOPE 217) on guitar. Nine songs, mixed and editied by Casey Rice."--description by El Bobo at Revolver Distribution THIS HEAT "Repeat/Health and Efficiency" (These) 2xlp 18.98 A long awaited reissue of two out of print releases from This Heat. "Health & Efficiency" was a 12" of classic This Heat angular art rock with odd time changes, discordant organ drones, and belligerent guitars. "Repeat" is an album long droney collage of all of the tape loops This Heat used during live performances. It never ceases to amaze how fresh This Heat's experiments with rock sound after over twenty years! As with all This Heat albums, this is essential! TOM VARNER "The Window Up Above" (New World) cd 15.98 "American Songs 1770-1998." THURSTON MOORE "Root" (Lo Recordings) cd/5xlp 19.98/29.00 "At base, it is a collection of Thurston Moore remixes. But the CD is only part of an intricate collaborative project, a year in the making, which takes in the world of visual art as well as a frankly impressive array of sonic scientists. Moore provided 30 different one minute guitar pieces. These were duplicated, packaged (bafflingly) in custom designed vacuum cleaner bags, and sent out to 100 artists and musicians who were invited to create a brand new work from Moore's source inspiration... There is no shortage of ideas - and Moore's all-pervasive crackle and hum is an unstinting source of wayward, captivating texture. Some tracks are admirably brief tone poems, suggestive fragments of sound keeping to the original 60 second time frame even as they take off in radical directions." - The Wire #176 With contributions from Mogwai, Add N To X, Derek Bailey, Alec Empire, Stereolab, Third Eye Foundation, Merzbow, Hypnotist, Spring Heel Jack, V/VM, and more! Right now we have in stock the limited edition vacuum cleaner bag packaging, but will have the standard version as soon as these sell out--which could have happened by the time you read this, sorry. We also have the limited vinyl box which includes bonus tracks y'know. VIRGINIA DARE "Baby Got Away" (Absolutely Kosher) cd 13.98 The amazingly beautiful, highly anticipated first full album (after a couple of 10"s and a compilation of those 10"s) from this popular SF trio composed of Mary O'Neil and Brad Johnson, both ex-Wannabe Texans, and Greg Freeman of Lowdown Studios and Pell Mell. Good ole fashioned Americana that sounds like an alt.country version of the Velvet Underground or the Young Marble Giants playing Freakwater songs. AMP "Stenorette" (Kranky) cd/lp ???/8.98 I had begun to wonder if Richard and Karine would do anything worth while again, as their debut "Sirenes" clearly stands above everything they have done... until "Stenorette." Working with producer Robert Hampson (Main, Loop), Amp has traded in their four track fuzziness for the crystal clear digital purity of Hampson's studio. In doing so, they have written a beautiful album of gossamer electronica / pop songs that nonetheless maintains their ghostly sadness. THIRD EYE FOUNDATION "Fear Of A Wack Planet" (Domino) cd/12" 7.98/8.98 Once in a blue moon an absolutely perfect single drops from heaven onto us mere mortals. It's almost unheard of that this phenomenon would be realized by the same band twice. Yet Matt Elliot, Mr. Third Eye Foundation first gave us the brilliant "Semtex" single... and now "Fear Of A Wack Planet." Majestic choral voices delicately float as haunting historical texts to a Baroque past with elegantly simple breakbeats forming the basic structure. Yes, this is the same alchemic formula that Enigma has been boring the world with for some time now, yet Third Eye Foundation's ability to manifest the sublime provides that elusive transcendental quality that makes this one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. CARDIGANS "Gran Turismo" (Mercury) cd 15.98 When Yo La Tengo went to rock school in their video for "Sugarcube", they were instructed that their third album must follow the ELP Rule - it must be double live! Well the Cardigans, in their recent matriculation into rock school, have followed a different rule for their third album - the Radiohead Rule - that if a band is in danger of being written off as a one-hit-wonder, they must make a third album of dark yet sugar-coated pop gems. Hence, "OK Computer" and now, for the Cardigans, "Gran Turismo". OK, it is unfair to compare this album to "OK Computer", but the Cardigans have realized their best album of bittersweet pop songs. (Sadly, however, there are no Black Sabbath covers on this album.) An Aquarius pop fave. PORTISHEAD "Roseland NYC Live" (London) cd 15.98 A lush and breathtaking live document of Portishead's amazing live performances. Gorgeous versions of all of the favourites backed by a full string section with oboes, flugel horns, trumpets, saxophones, flutes, trombones, Geoff Barrows' economic turntablism, and Beth Gibbons' spirited vocals. TARENTEL "s/t" (Temporary Residence Limited) cd 5.98 An impressive debut from this delicate spacy local group that is very reminiscent of Low and the good stuff from Kranky. A hidden bonus track features a great electronica reworking by Arrow. NEOTROPIC "Mr. Brubaker's Strawberry Alarm Clock" (Ninja Tune) cd/lp 14.98/16.98 Riz Maslen's first outings as Neotropic and Small Fish With Spine were not all that impressive, but her new album for Ninja Tune certainly is. "Mr. Brubaker's Strawberry Alarm Clock" is a very good brew of searing beats, arrhythmic time signatures (ever heard 'dance music' in 9/8?), and amazing sampledelia that is reminiscent of all of the great sampling tricks pulled out by Amon Tobin. One of the only women in the electronica scene that [1] creates all her own music [2] in her own studio and [3] it's really good. FUCKHEAD "The Male Comedy" (Mego) cd 16.98 Calling this an industrial record certainly does this record no justice... Although Fuckhead's overblown testosterone laden angst is clearly presented through digital technology, thankfully none of the dated Front 242 or Rammstein references appear. Instead dense hyperactive sampling and digital noise processing dominate the album. Certainly an odd choice for digital electronica saboteurs Mego to release, but nonetheless an brutal and beguiling album. Recommended. PLASTIKMAN "Artifakts (BC)" (Novamute) cd 14.98 Representing the last installment in the trilogy of Plastikman records that also included "Sheet One" and "Musik" (but not the claustrophobic brilliance of "Consumed"), this album is minimal collection of austere bleep electronica that has mutated out of the Plus 8 school of Detroit techno. MELT BANANA "Charlie" (A-Zap) cd/lp 12.98/8.98 With every release, you wonder how Melt Banana is going to make their records just as fierce and brutal as the last without indulging in banal formulas. Yet their sound has evolved into complex shards of Dadaist hardcore played with hyperkinetic precision. One of the highlights on this album is their insane collaboration with Mr. Bungle! Highly recommended! PATRIC CATANI "100 DPS" (DHR Limited) cd/lp 10.98/10.98 Can't say that any of the EC8OR records have anything for me. But when EC8OR's Gina and Patric are working independently of each other, the results kick ass. Patric's latest assualt features an arsenal of 'Amen' breaks shattered into high velocity shards of spastic snares and devestating bass. Digital Hardcore junkies will be most pleased! TWO DOLLAR GUITAR "Train Songs" (Oil City / Smells Like Records) cd 10.98 "Pulse, motion, friction, drone; the quasi-erotic/sexual rhythms of locomotive travel. Trains are consummately musical machines, particularly in our age, where the boundary between 'noise' and 'music' is, at best, totally fluid. Like J.M.W. Turner's 'Rain, Steam, and Speed,' wherein the painter attempts to grasp the vivid drama of technological encroachment on natural phenomena, Two Dollar Guitar's 'Train Songs' likewise amplifies the fragile, intimate relations between the hyperational mnemonics of studio tape recordings and the raw flux of real-time aural physics." - from the ultra academic liner notes provided by Lionel M. Wise, PhD. UNC at Chapel Hill. We just thought it was neat that there would be an alt.country version of Hoenniger's "Pacific 231" ALAN LICHT / LOREN MAZZACANE CONNERS "Hoffmann Estates" (Drag City) cd 13.98 An impressive line-up accompanies this 'duet' between Alan Licht and Loren Mazzacane Connors with production by Jim O'Rourke and contributions from Darin Gray (ex-Dazzling Killmen), Rob Mazurak (Isotope 217), Ken Vandermark, amongst others. Slow lugubrious guitar solos with minimal jazz structures. BECK "Mutations" (DGC) cd 15.98 It's the new Beck album that isn't the new album (i.e. not the intended sequel to "Odelay"). With previously released stuff and some new songs. You have to wonder at the Os Mutantes references: the album's name is "Mutations" and the featured single is called "Tropicalia"?! Hmmm... INK & DAGGER "Philapsychosis" (Revelation) 7" 3.99 INK & DAGGER "The Fine Art Of Original Sin" (Initial) cd 13.98 Vampiric emo-no-wave-techno-metal. Listen to them. The Philadelphian children of the night. What beautiful music they make. ...Take the weirdest keyboard black metal (Arcturus/Septic Flesh), the prog-post-punk & male vocals of Dischord band Circus Lupus, occasional Cradle of Filth style female vocals, and gothic corpsepaint (really) and add a little Autechre & you've got Ink & Dagger, more or less. JOHN ZORN "Music For Children" (Tzadik) cd 15.98 But music for whose children? Cover art by Katan Amano, Yoshida Ryoichi, Macioce, Henry Darger, Hans Belmer and other artists give this music a context of abject child sexuality. The music is really diverse, from the quick-change acrobatics of Boston's Prelapse performing Naked City compositions, to Zorn "playing" wind machines (lovely!), to Anthony Coleman playing a celeste music box, to a spaghetti western sounding piece with Ribot, Friedlander and Greg Cohen, to a piece with the Abel-Steinberg-Winant Trio. This is one of Zorn's best cd's in quite a while. ALVIN CURRAN "Theme Park" (Tzadik) cd 15.98 Two pieces for solo percussionist--in this case, local madman William Winant. ANNIE GOSFIELD "Burnt Ivory and Loose Wires" (Tzadik) cd 15.98 Sometimes aggressive, sometimes gentle, and as the title suggests, having to do with the destruction of a piano. Extended performance techniques reconfigured through a sampler. Features the Rova Sax Quartet. Quite nice. DAVID SHEA "Classical Works" (Tzadik) cd 15.98 An intersection of the classical sounds of the Ictus Ensemble with Shea's ever-changing approach to sampling techniques. TAKAKO MINEKAWA "Cloudy Cloud Calculator" (March) cd 12.98 Sweet lo-fi electro pop for casio from this Japanese woman who put on one hell of a good instore here at Aquarius! FLOSSIE AND THE UNICORNS "LMNOP" (Skin Graft) cd 13.98 "Free guitar lessons for animals! Free guitar lessons for animals! Hello, little tiger! Do you want to learn to play the guitar? Just scratch the strings. This is a chord. Now start a band!" If only it were that simple! Miss Pussycat (of Mr. Quintron fame) is renowned for her giddy puppetshows. This recording fearures of a number of the musicals she's written for her puppets. Imagine the Teletubbies on a lot more acid than they already are! SIMON JOYNER "Yesterday, Tommorrow, and In Between" (Sing, Eunchs!) 2cd 15.98 Elliott Smith does not have to be the only folk troubador of the 90s... Not when Simon Joyner can follow in Leonard Cohen's footsteps of sad crooner songs and heart breaking melodies. HURL "We Are Quite In This Room" (My Pal God) cd/lp 11.98/10.98 Intricate imploded almost-emo from Pittsburg. AUTECHRE/TORTOISE (Thrill Jockey) 12" 6.98 Oh we had so much hope for this... And it is definitely OK but not as exciting as previously-released projects by either of the two parties involved. CRAZY WISDOM MASTERS (Black Hoods) 10" 7.98 Actually the Jungle Brothers. TAIRIKUOTOKO VS SANMYAKUONNA "Viva Young Florida" (Magaibutsu) cd 14.98 The wonderful, surprise second album from this all-star Japanese outfit (with members of Ruins, Omoide Hatoba, Bondage Fruit, etc.) whose main songwriter is Tatsuya Yoshida of Ruins. Musically this combines the manic, complex prog of his main band with elements of jazz, pop, cartoon music, and unclassifiable weirdness with instrumentation that includes guitars, keyboards, bass, drums, sampler, trumpet, violin, clarinet, sax, and of course lots of bizarre vocals. This is some of the most intensely strange, happy, lovely, beautiful, well-played "rock" music of 1998. PRESAGE "Outer Perimeter" (Future Primitives) cd/lp 12.98/14.98 From the folks who brought you the modern DJ classics by Cut Chemist & Shortkut and Z-Trip & Radar, this is the Future Primitive label's 3rd release - a studio turntablist album from the collaboration between Mr. Dibbs, DJ Jel, and MC Dose. Similiar in scope to Mixmaster Mike's "Anti-Theft Device" and is full of Illuminati references and wild scratching. JETS TO BRAZIL "Orange Rhyming Dictionary" (Jade Tree) cd/lp 10.98/8.98 New New-York-City-based band featuring Blake Schwarzenbach, ex-Jawbreaker. RUNAWAYS UK "Classic Tales" (Three*Sixty/Arcade America) cd 14.98 One of the best instrumental hip hop records of 1997 has finally been re-issued here in the States. A stunning combination of the sharpest of breaks and witty turntablism, with the addition of classical guitar on a coupla tracks, for fans of the old Mo' Wax sound found on the first 'Headz' compilation (the Runaways personnel is two guys from that Mo'Wax group RPM). It's all midtempo and very accessible. One of Windy's favorite records. MIMIC AND THE MODEL VOLUME 1 (Mimic and the Model) 12" 5.98 The first in a new series of minimalist electronica following the tropes of the Basic Channel aesthetic with minimal information, exquisite skeletal bleeps & blips that fade in and out of structural sequencing, and a high degree of anonymity (though we will tell you this is S.F. electronica wizard Kit Clayton). Very nice! KJETIL D. BRANDSDAL "Freedom--Waaaoh Waaoh" (Corpus Hermeticum) cd 16.98 Of Norwegian decent, though a current resident of Northern Ireland, Kjetil D. Brandsal constructs ominous lo-fi droning tape loops similar to a gritty variant of Omit accompanied by thobbing de-tuned bass and occasional post-VU strum. A very nice introduction / documentation on the perennially great Corpus Hermeticum! ORGANUM "Volume One" (Robot) cd 14.98 This collection features remastered material from the LAYLAH anti-records "Tower of Silence" and "In Extremis" as well as their split LP track "Rasa" with Nurse With Wound on United Daries. Organum is masterminded by David Jackman whose intense acoustic layers of droning noise are generated from bowed metal and mysterious whisperings. It is certainly nice to see these recordings available again after being out of print for so long. Fans of AMM and/or Tony Conrad should definitely take note! RST "R136a" (Ecstatic Peace) cd 12.98 Sitting in a pooly ventilated barn behind his house outside of Auckland, New Zealand during one particularly hot winter, Andrew Moon struggled with his guitar to produce these humid noise drones layered with peculiar chord based structures. One of the best albums to come out of 'free noise' school of New Zealand in years! BIRCHVILLE CAT MOTEL "s/t" (Insample) cd 15.98 The debut album from this enigmatic New Zealand noise outfit who recently released an album for the great Drunken Fish label. Nauseating electronics, guitar noise, and cymbal crashing that comes off as an amalgamation between Solmania and Skullflower. Packaged somewhat annoyingly in an oversized 7" package and zip-lock bag. RYOJI IKEDA "Time and Space" (Staalplaat) 2x3"cd 17.98 When he released "+/-", he totally broke new ground for minimalist digital music. He was then strangely criticised for the accessiblity of his next recording, "0 Degrees C". "Time and Space" finds a middleground. He is able to create a deep and complex field of sound with the very simple elements of tones and clicks. KURTIS MANTRONIK "I Sing the Body Electro" (Oxygen) cd 14.98 The genius behind Mantronix is back with kick-ass beats and breaks--bringing together the disjointed electro he helped pioneer with the sonds of new school hip-hop and electronica. THE FIELD MICE "Where'd You Learn to Kiss That Way?" (Shinkansen) 2cd 18.98 Compilation of Sarah band's twee bliss pop, most of it now out of print, I think. Definitely for fans of Belle and Sebastian. THE IN OUT "The Viscera Versa Story" (Loveletter) cd 10.98 A collection of demos and live tracks of super lo-fi recordings from the stateside equivalent of the Fall. Recommended. IRON MAIDEN remasters (Raw Power) enhanced cds 15.98 each After being out of print for the last year or two, all these classic Iron Maiden titles (and a few, later, not-so-classic ones) have been reissued domestically in remastered, repackaged (big booklets of photos, artwork & lyrics) and cd-rom enhanced (with videos!) form. We've got "Iron Maiden", "Killers" (that's a metal must-have sez Allan), "Number of the Beast", "Piece of Mind", & "Powerslave" (those are the good ones...well okay, maybe "Seventh Son of A Seventh Son" also). Anyway, it's time to get rid of your old scratchy vinyl or cassette copies and pick up some of these new cds. And is it just me, or did they somehow make the cover art look even better? The cd-rom stuff is really well done, too. Up the Irons! CERTAIN BEYOND REASONABLE DOUBT "Live Berlin '98" (Manifold) cd 13.98 A live collision of the combined forces of Mick Harris (Scorn) and Tony Child (Surgeon) making freaky nightmare sonic landscapes. HOLOSUD "Fijnewas Afpompen" (A-Musik) cd 16.98 The duo of F.X. Randomiz and Joe Schlammpeitzeger make quite a groovy album of self-made synths and intricate sampling. ILK "Zenith" (No Fans) cd 15.98 The first release on Richard Youngs' No Fans label since the early '90s his one-man progressive rock band Ilk. Mock-suites of beautifully intricate rock structures that include classical guitar and sleigh bells. No mellotron though. KING BROTHERS (Bulb) cd 10.98 The quality-trash rock merchants at Bulb bring to us this Japanese ultra-distorted noisy garage fuzz trio, a band clearly trying to give countrymen Guitar Wolf a run for their money. EDDY DETROIT "Immortal Gods" (Majora) cd 12.98 Cd reish of an early-'80s self released exotic-cult-folk-primitive-rock lp, from a guy who's been part of the Sun City Girls mythos since their days in Arizona...features James from Paris 1942, Charlie & Alan from the Sun City Girls, and Mary & Dan from Victory Acres. BUMP AND GRIND "Init Sequence" (Sub Rosa) cd 15.98 Described as "cinemascopic big beat" but that's not to say that they sound like the tepid funk of the likes of Chemical Brothers--rather, Bump & Grind drop explosive 'Amen' drum & bass breaks as well as swing 4/4 drum kicks. Includes remix work by Third Eye Foundation and Scanner. Nice graphics too. V/A "Chef Aid: The South Park Album" (American) cd 16.98 Well it looks like everybody wanted to be on this album, and lots of them are: Primus (with the theme song and more), Ozzy Osbourne/Old Dirty Bastard/DMX/Crystal Method, Wyclef Jean, Devo, Ween, Meat Loaf, Perry Farrel, Rick James, Elton John, and more...argh. Almost worth the 17 bucks though for "Come Sail Away" as sung by the show's Cartman. Several other tracks are pretty amazing too, actually, including the aforementioned Ozzy/Ol'Dirty etc. thing, the Chef's outrageous "Chocolate Salty Balls", and especially "Kenny's Dead", a remake of Curtis Mayfield's "Freddie's Dead" done No Limit style by Master P & crew--which basically makes unintended mockery of the entire gangsta rap genre. Ah, you can give it as a Christmas present to your favorite South Park fan. NMPERIGN "44'33"/5" (Twisted Village) cd 12.98 Spare, cacophonous improv trio of trumpet, sax and percussion. From Boston, but with both downtown New York and downtown (?) Tokyo credentials. STILLUPPSTEYPA "Has (Or Has Not) Happened" (Meme) cd 17.98 Ultra minimal 55 minute live performance by this ever-weirder Icelandic band. From scraping metal to sub wind frequency tones, to clipped click/pop sounds, into slow sweeping drones. Jim approved. METALLICA "Garage, Inc." (Elektra) 2xcd 23.00 Well, easily the best Metallica record of the last decade or so...of course, it's all covers, one disc of old stuff (including, the classic "Garage Days Revisted" and "Re-Revisted" eps) and another disc of newly-recorded cover versions, everything from Sabbath to Nick Cave, from Misfits to Mercyful Fate. RZA "As Bobby Digital In Stereo" (Gee Street) 17.98 Wu-time! 21 tracks of RZA, exploring his even-larger than life alter ego Bobby Digital. This'll be everywhere, so enough said. RED CRAYOLA "Live 1967" (Drag City) 2xcd 18.98 Vintage psychedelic freakout stuff, including a track with guest John Fahey. ORANGE CAKE MIX "Microcosmic Wonderland" (Audio Information Phenomena) cd/10" 8.98/7.98 More midtempo loungey pop gems from the extremely prolific James Rao. For fans of the Darla label. M.S.B.R. + KENGO LUCHI (Alien8) cd 14.98 Japanese noise, three live duets plus a solo track from each artist. M.S.B.R. does musique concrete/electronics, Kengo Luchi does "death folk" with anguished vocals a la Keiji Haino. Together, it's meandering no wave folk with electronic freakouts, not for the faint of heart. V/A "Musique Non Stop: A Tribute To Kraftwerk" (EMI, Japan) cd 26.00 Japanese artists cover their favorite Kraftwerk tunes. Participants include Melt Banana, Zeni Geva, Buffalo Daughter and a bunch of others we're not familiar with, but who seem to be part of the Japanese avant-pop electronica scene. The whole thing is great, absolutely recommended. LOVE LIVE LIFE + 1 "Love Will Make A Better You" cd 24.00 Finally, a cd reissue of this extrememly rare, sought-after early '70's document of Japanese psychedelia. Includes a live bonus track. Essentially, freaked-out "krautrock" a la Faust, but from Japan. (There even seems to be a little Sly Stone to them too.) DAVE WATSON'S THE WAX "Wax And Wane" (Doctor Jim's) cd 14.98 An Australian import, but although band leader David Watson is from that corner of the globe, the other players on here are generally to be found Downtown, New York City...Andrea Parkins, Kato Hideki, Ikue Mori, and others. Japanese turntable genius Otomo Yoshihide also appears. What makes this stand out from any other bunch of NYC all-star avant-jazz improv jams? Well, Mr. Watson's main instrument is the bagpipes! The result: totally great, unusual bagpipe, um, squeezing, in a "free-rock" context. Recommended. CROSSED OUT "Discography" cd 15.98 26+ tracks of hate-filled, bile-spewing, ultra-pissed grind. Sounds like old Napalm Death stumbling drunkenly (but at breakneck speed) down a muddy embankment, through an impenetrable swamp, hot on your trail and ready to kill you and gut you! Probably the only grindcore band that mattered (well, them and Drop Dead). CAVE-IN "Until Your Heart Stops" (Hydra Head) cd 11.98 Brutal but occasionally beautiful metallic hardcore, for fans of Coalesce, Deadguy and that ilk. This has been described as a mixture of Slayer and Radiohead (!) and I can almost see why. Andee approved. MAKIGAMI KOICHI & ANTON BRUHIN "Electric Eel" (Tzadik) cd 15.98 Japanese avant-vocalist Koichi and Swiss voice/tape experimentalist Bruhin team up on an array of home-built electric jaw harps! Extended techniques (based on Tuvan throat-singing) abound, the two harpists creating an amazing & amusing symphony of some very bizarre, unlikely sounds. Plus, it's practically three records in one, as Koichi is heard in one speaker and Bruhin in the other--so you can listen in stereo or have the option to hear each man individually! V/A "Electric Losers 2" cd 17.98 "The Story of Volkslied Into Krautrock Goes On"...yes, the third and fourth volumes of the previously vinyl-only "Pre-Kraut Pandaemonium" series are compiled onto cd. 29 tracks of crazee German '60s beat music. TO ROCOCO ROT + D "TRRD" (Soul Static Sound) cd/lp 14.98/10.98 The UK's "D" (Darryl Moore, Soul Static Sound producer) collaborates on this ep with German dub/electronica/modern krautrocking band To Rococo Rot, resulting in a mix of their "electronics, samples, and live instrumentation" with his minimalist techno "grit". MESHUGGAH "Chaosphere" (Nuclear Blast) cd 14.98 Cyberetic sci-fi Swedish metallers return with this long-awaited full-length, which combines the most brutal vocals and heavy, twisted grooves with some totally off-the wall sounds, particularly in the sometimes almost jazz-fusion guitar department. Some song titles: "New Millenium Cyanide Christ", "The Exquisite Machinery of Torture"...the latter possibly a good description of this band. V/A "Columbia Japan Label Sampler" (Columbia, Japan) cd 18.98 All pretty great early 1970s psychedelic rock music from Japan, ranging from the heavy blues (such as the almost-Sabbathy Blues Creation's "Atomic Bombs Away") to folky pop sounds (the lovely Yamauchi Tetsu) and plain weirdness (like Bread & Butter's ridiculous & manic version of "I Wanna Be Your Man"). Includes tracks from obsure hippy wonders like the Flower Travellin' Band, Far East Family Band, Mizutani Kimio, Cosmos Factory, April Fool, Narita Ken, and others, all from mosty not-as-yet-reissued albums. A nice smorgasbord of far-out trippiness to explore! PRAXIS "Mold" (Yikes Records) cd 15.98 Perhaps this shouldn't be called a Praxis record (the only previous Praxis-member present is mastermind Bill Laswell himself, and "Mold" sure don't sound like any of the fusion/funk/metal Praxis has been known for) but it's also my favorite Praxis record since at least the very-different "Sacrifist". Electronic beats, lots of synths and sampling, stabs of classical, drifting droning beauty. Very nice. (And no Buckethead, if that matters.) COMUS "First Utterance" (Get Back/Abraxas) 2xlp 18.98 Wow! From the lost, misty past (England, 1970) comes this pagan folk-psychedelic masterpiece. Decribed by one (negative) critic at the time as a cross between the witches Sabbat in MacBeth and "Marc Bolan being squeezed to death"! While it does sound a bit like that, it is actually quite brilliant. Scary, demented, acid acoustic/electric rock epics with utterly unhinged vocals, about death, insanity, and the worship of ancient gods! There's been a hard-to-find cd reish, but this lovely lp reissue (beautiful cover repro, 180-gram pure virgin vinyl) includes a bonus 45 rpm 12" with three songs taken from their rare debut single. Christians beware. GOD IS MY CO-PILOT "Get Busy" (Atavistic) cd 13.98 Newest from these always-fun NYC queer-positive artskronk rockers. THE PRETTY THINGS "S.F. Sorrow" (Snapper) cd 11.98 Finally, an inexpensive reissue of this classic Beatles-inspired psych-pop album from 1968, and it even includes four bonus cuts. A long-time AQ-favorite. Covered by Barbara Manning, so you know it must be good. CREATION "Making Time: The Complete Collection Volume 1" "Biff Bang Pow!: The Complete Collection Volume 2" (Retroactive) cd/2lp 12.98/16.98 Alan McGee named his label after this '60s band. RED SNAPPER "Making Bones" (Warp) cd/2xlp 18.98/17.98 Latest full-length from this British funky drum n' bass band (yes, a live band) in the Mo'Wax tradition. ----* ----* Bad Vugum Shipment Is Here! : ----* In finding it so difficult to get a hold of the exquisite Finnish label, Bad Vuguum, Aquarius has taken it upon itself to order a pretty large amount of their eclectic catalogue that ranges from "Gregorian doom operas" to "choir shouting" to "snot folk" and "tundra garage." Always unique and challenging, often difficult, these records are essential and highly recommended! Note: We actually got more titles than these, but already sold out of some of them, so we're only listing what we have--but we'll restock soon, so there should be a few more to be found on the next AQ-List! KEUKHOT "Mita Otat Mukaan Muistoksi Sivistyksesta" (Bad Vuguum) cd/lp 15.98/14.98 "Ruskea Aikakirja" (Bad Vuguum) cd 15.98 Similar to Uz Jsme Doma in constructing post-Residents 'avantgarde vaudevillian' tunes, though Finland's Keuhkot is often wackier and less structural than the Czech wizards. The CD of "Mita Otat..." comes with two out of print singles that features the earlier, more belligerent material which counts as some of Keuhkot's best material! "Vasen Ja Oikea" is a short mini-CD of Keuhkot's weird Residents vs. Tom Waits fusions performed almost entirely on computers to unsettling results. "Ruskea Aikakirja" is Keuhkot's latest album whose refined quality features Kake Puhuu's weirdo angularity that sounds like Wagnerian nintendo music. CIRCLE "Meronia" (Bad Vuguum) cd/2lp 15.98/16.98 "Kollekt" (Bad Vuguum) cd 14.98 "Zolpaki" (Bad Vuguum) cd/2lp 15.98/16.98 To be completely honest, Circle is the reason why we contacted Bad Vuguum in the first place. Conceptually, Circle takes their name very seriously, as they construct ever shifting cyclical patterns within post-Krautrock structures. Each of these as with all Circle records comes very highly recommended!!! "Meronia" is the very hard to find first album from Circle which is the most "rock" version of Circle that sprawls through the hypnotic grooves with the sheer force of Loop or Godflesh. The double LP features a bonus cut not on the CD. "Zolpaki" may be Circle's best record with their "Gregorian mood-fuck explosion." An atmospheric doom opera whose hypnotic grooves recall the best parts of "Tago Mago." The vinyl has a kick-ass 10 minute bonus track that does not on the CD. "Kollekt" is an exhaustive retrospective of the earliest Circle singles, demos, and unreleased tracks. We also still have their most recent album, the wonderful "Pori", which was listed last time and would have been made "Album of the Week" on that list had we had enough copies in stock at the time. We do now, so check it out too! KIRVASTO "Taydellisia Kysymykia" (Bad Vuguum) cd 14.98 The Bad Vuguum, er, 'super group' of Finnish luminaries from the likes of Circle, Sweetheart, Keuhkot, and Aavikko is a culmination of hypnotic experimental rock that resembles the more laid back 'coctail' album from Circle "Hissi." SWEETHEART "An Ordinary Family" (Bad Vuguum) cd 18.98 Maintaining the loyalty to twisted Beefheartian overtones with Birthday Party dementia, this album is less of all out noise attack (as previous Sweetheart albums have been) and more of the trash blues that Pussy Galore wallowed in so well. RADIOPUHELIMET "Hiljaista" (Bad Vuguum) cd 15.98 After five albums on Scandivanian majors (hey, Refused have found their way on the Swedish majors), Radiopuhelimet return to their original label - Bad Vuguum - for their latest album, that maintains their well established razor sharp double guitar fire and imaginative rhythmic attacks. See Rapeman or Jesus Lizard for more sane stateside comparisons. OVALKI "Cobol" (Bad Vuguum) cd 7.98 Three former members of Circle got back together to explore dark industrial grooves that clearly refer to their work with the earlier incarnation of Circle with expressive jazz flares throughout the screeching breaks and throbbing guitars. ----* ----* Printed Matter : ----* PUNK PLANET #28 zine 2.00 What is rapidly becoming essential reading around my house is this amazing magazine. Not only one of the most beautifully-designed (along with Bunnyhop) rags, Punk Planet covers in depth issues lesser magazines like SPIN and Magnet are too shallow and too oblivious to touch (they'd rather interview whitebluesboy Jon Spencer for the thousandth time...YAWN). This issue features a fascinating article on the lack of health care in the music industry, Jets To Brazil, why small business is so punk rock (yes!), and race issues in the punk community (double yes!). Very worthy of your time. BITCH v.3,n.3 magazine 3.25 Lisa Miya-Jervis and staff strike again with incisive insightful feminist takes on all sorts of pop culture, including Ally McBeal, artist Phoebe Gloeckner, and Why Jane Magazine Is So Fucking Lame (thank you, Bitch, for reading my mind.) While returning home from a Halloween gig in New York City, the band's van was cut off by another car forcing Simeon to take evasive action causing the van to roll numerous times. Drummer Danny Taylor escaped with a few bruises and was able to revive an unconscious and not breathing Simeon by giving him CPR before the ambulance arrived. Simeon was then airlifted to a nearby hospital where he was placed on the critical list for three and a half days. He has extensive injuries which include a broken neck, an injured spine and his legs were paralyzed for some time. He now has more sensation in his legs, yet his hands are still somewhat dysfunctional. Although Simeon survived, this tragic accident leaves the future of Silver Apples in serious speculation. Cards and well-wishes may be sent to Simeon c/o Whirlybird Records, 28 Decatur Ave., Annnapolis, MD, 21403." At last report, Simeon is in good spirits and undergoing physical therapy four times a day. The outpouring of well-wishing has prompted him to consider setting up an Injured Musicans Fund for others finding themselves in similar predicament. If this comes to fruition, we will definitely let you know. Our pal Miwa over at Digital Hardcore tells us you can get DHR hoodies straight from England. I think this is the 'A-Number One Problem' with any kind of presentational storytelling ... where, how and with whom is the reader to empathize, or even identify, when he or she is perpetually being presented with the particular exterior of a person... One need only examine the number of empathetic comic-strip protagonists who are decidedly non-defined visually, i.e. Charlie Brown, Tintin, The Yellow Kid--essentially all bald children with dots for eyes--to see how particular visual details interfere with the reader's ability to 'enter' or 'sympathize' with a character." --Chris Ware, creator of the Acme Novelty Library, in Bunnyhop #9 "People say to me that it must be easier for me now that we've got this 'post-rock' and 'Electronica'... A lot of this is very young people with not much musical ability creating stuff that sounds kind of weird--and to their friends it seems really, really weird--but eventually they hear other stuff and they think 'Well, it's not really THAT weird!' Some of these people might become dedicated to making truly weird music, but they're not really that dedicated yet, it's an initial stage. I hear that, so it's hard for me to listen to it--I know the REALLY WEIRD stuff! I get in this position most with my own kids. I don't want to discourage them, anything they want to listen to, I think it's great. I try not to be cantankerous about it. When my daughter Jenny started getting into Phish, I'm saying 'Well, listen to these Miles Davis records because that's what they're doing and this is much better.'" --Eugene Chadbourne in this month's Wire #177 Staying dry and warm, Windy Allan Andee Jim Marc Byram and Elisabeth
