IMPORTANT (Please read to avoid confusion):
Some items below may be tagged with a bold, red, all-caps "out of print/unavailable" notice. This does NOT mean that all other items not so tagged are, in fact, in stock -- or for that matter, in print and available, though there's a good chance they are. Some folks get confused on this point, and we can see why, so please read this for further clarification and other important before-you-order information. Unlike some mailorder websites, we don't have an electronic inventory system linked to our site, so you can't be sure of what we actually have or don't have in stock at any given moment without asking us -- please email our mailorder department for availability status -- or better yet, just go ahead and place your order using our shopping cart function and we'll get back to you with the status of each item. If you have general non-mailorder questions, email the store.

album cover PERRY, LEE Skanking With the Upsetter: Rare Dubs 1971-1974 (Jamaican Recordings) cd 14.98
There are these little things that Lee Perry will do sometimes that continue to make me giddy: capitalizing on the sound of a dying organ in its swan song, using the mixing console's test tone generator or a momentary feedback loop to create a blast of noise or, in the case of the Three Blind Dub track and others on this disc, using the studio's talk back system and tape delay to insert vocal effects onto the beginning of the track while relaying important directoral information to the group -- pragmatic and entertaining. From Jamaican Recordings, the same label that brought us the excellent Augustus Pablo "Dubbing With the Don" and the Revolutionaries "At Studio 1: Dub Plate Specials" reissues comes this fine collection of dubs recorded by Perry at Randy's Studio 17 between 1971 and 1974. Like the other releases on this label, not only are the recordings of excellent quality sound-wise but are just a plain great choice of dubs. And unlike many compilations which claim "rare" material when they only have two or three unreleased tracks at most on the album (the rest being the same 10 or so dubs that one seems to find on every garden variety comp.), you'll actually hear some *good* Lee Perry cuts you haven't heard before. Vinyl buyers be forewarned that the lp version contains two less tracks than the cd, though the vinyl itself is an excellent pressing.
