IMPORTANT (Please read to avoid confusion):
Some items below may be tagged with a bold, red, all-caps "out of print/unavailable" notice. This does NOT mean that all other items not so tagged are, in fact, in stock -- or for that matter, in print and available, though there's a good chance they are. Some folks get confused on this point, and we can see why, so please read this for further clarification and other important before-you-order information. Unlike some mailorder websites, we don't have an electronic inventory system linked to our site, so you can't be sure of what we actually have or don't have in stock at any given moment without asking us -- please email our mailorder department for availability status -- or better yet, just go ahead and place your order using our shopping cart function and we'll get back to you with the status of each item. If you have general non-mailorder questions, email the store.

album cover RIVAL SCHOOLS United By Fate (Island) cd 16.98
If you're anything like me (Andee), you absolutely -loved- Quicksand and shed quite a few tears when they called it quits. Rarely had there been such an aggressive, almost-metal band that managed to be melodic and catchy as fuck without sounding cheesy or commercial. Plus there cover of the Smiths' 'How Soon Is Now' has to be one of the best covers ever! Then there was the much rumored World's Fastest Car, the pop band fronted by Quicksand's Walter Schreifels. Nothing materialised sadly, but then along came Rival Schools to save the day. And while it's not pop exactly, it's definitely not as 'metal' as Quicksand. Imagine Quicksand with some of the rough edges taken off, and add in a little emo. That's right, EMO. Sure Quicksand was pretty emo, but Rival Schools are EMO (track four is bonafide breakup tape material). But not like Rites of Spring or anything. Just sort of heartfelt and earnest and most of it's because of Walter's high keening wails, that somehow manage to be rough and scratchy as well as whiny and sad-boy-sounding. Makes the Get Up Kids and Weezer and all those punks sound like pubescent Lou Barlows. And the vocals are just the beginning: huge catchy riffs, awesome drumming, weirdly layered production and stick-in-your-head choruses make this one of my records of the year. This is just a completely great, rollicking kick-ass rock record, of which there are far too few.
