V/A Troubled Troubadours (The Omni Recording Corporation) cd 17.98
THIS IS CURRENTLY OUT OF PRINT OR OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE TO US AT THE MOMENT, SO PLEASE DO NOT ORDER IT. SORRY. There's no shortage of incredible reissue labels, and depending on our mood, or what record just came out, we could go any way if forced to pick, but honestly, we find ourselves always coming back to Omni, not only are their reissues incredibly and meticulously researched and curated, with extensive liner notes, rare photos, all that jazz, but the sounds are bizarre and beautiful, balancing precariously between unsung country classics, and the demented dark underbelly of country music, we love both, but definitely lean toward the latter, and thankfully, so does Omni it seems. As if to prove that point, along comes Troubled Troubadours, another collection of sick twisted country sounds, which on the surface, aren't so obviously twisted, but dig a little deeper and these songs blossom into far out tales of misery and woe, murder and mayhem, even one about shooting God! Weird indeed. There are some musical moments of madness, the bizarre looped vocal / Theremin sounding main melody on Homer And Jethro's "Monster Mash" sounding "A Crept Into The Crypt And Cried" for example, but then there's intense dark musical gems like Waylon Jennings' "Delia's Gone", a brooding dark creep complete with haunting sitar buzz. Dolly Parton contributes two tracks, one a haunting tale of an abandoned mother, the other, a harrowing tale of a women committed, and longing for her Daddy to come set her free. And then there's the aforementioned "Are They Gonna Shoot God", a weepy melodramatic soft focus hippy country ballad, where a little boy asks his daddy if they're gonna shoot God, while an angelic chorus echoes the question. Weird. Porter Wagoner is present of course, Omni has already done two Wagoner collections, and here Wagoner tells the tale of "Waldo The Weirdo". Cargill Henson makes an appearance too, after two of his own Omni collections, with the reverbed jangle of "Daddy, What's A Tree?". There's Bobby Bare's "Your Credit Card Won't Get You Into Heaven", a cautionary tale, all gospel organ and baritone croon, and Lester Flatt's "I Can't Tell The Boys From The Girls", another cautionary tale of sorts, about dating in the big city, and so it goes. Every song, no matter how traditional sounding on the surface, hiding something sick or sinister, hilarious or goofy underneath. If you dug any of the other Omni records, Porter Wagoner, Dee Mullins, Johnny Paycheck, Lorne Greene or the Plantation Gold collection, which was a former Record Of The Week, then odds are you're gonna dig this too. And most definitely recommended to any fans of incredibly strange music. Country or otherwise...

V/A Troubleman Mixtape (Troubleman Unlimited) 2cd 14.98
In an attempt to come up with the perfect compilation (in the spirit of collections like No New York, Flex Your Head, Not So Quiet on the Western Front and the like), Mike Troubleman took four years to compile this appropriately titled "Mix Tape" of bands he's currently into. Features exclusive tracks by Burmese, Pink & Brown, Erase Errata, Lightning Bolt, The Locust, The Fucking Champs, XBXRX, Melt Banana, Subtonix, Unwound, Men's Recovery Project, Pixeltan, The Monorchid, Outhud, Blonde Redhead, Red Monkey, Total Shutdown, Bride of No No, Glass Candy and the Shattered Theatre, Flying Luttenbachers, Black Dice, Rah Bras, and many more, including contributions by now-defunct bands such as The Cranium and Crom-Tech. Unfortunately, many of the tracks (like on most compilations nowadays) are throwaways, either poorly recorded or not indicative of "normal" output. Anyway, if you're at all interested in what's "happening" in the current indie underground scene, this is definitely a good introduction to many lesser-known bands.
V/A Troubleman Sampler (Troubleman Unlimited) cd 5.98
Punky noisy label Troubleman records has put out many awesome records; this comp is a low-priced way to check out tracks from a bunch of their current, recent and here-very-soon releases. Features a ton of AQ and customer fave bands! Dig it: Erase Errata, Wolf Eyes, Glass Candy, Orthrelm, The Walkmen, Subtonix, Pixeltan, The Roger Sisters, Songs Of Zarathustra, Meta*Matics, The Flying Luttenbachers, The Panthers, ABC's, Numbers, Kepler, Red Monkey, The Lack, Touchdown, Milky Wimpshake and Pussycat Trash, plus an Erase Errata remix by Adult (from the upcoming Erase Errata remix album).

V/A TRR50 Thank You (Temporary Residence Ltd.) cd 11.98
TRR50 Thank You marks the fiftieth release on Temporary Residence, and the thanks really should go both ways. Thanks Jeremy and T.R. for bringing such great music to the ears of many! This comp reveals the vast scope of this label -- from jazzy propulsive and glistening post-rock (Rumah Sakit, Sonna, Kilowatthours, Explosions In The Sky, Parlour) to gentle acoustic folkiness (Howard Hello) to atmospheric soundscapes (Tarentel, Kammerflimmer Kollektief) to glitchy electronic dreaminess (Fridge, Sybarite). Whether heavy and angular or delicate and vaporous, each Temporary Residence release maintains a common thread of beauty. Each of the eleven tracks is new and exclusive to this release!

V/A Truck Driver's Boogie: Big Rig Hits Vol. 1 (Diesel Only / Koch / Audium) cd 15.98
THIS IS CURRENTLY OUT OF PRINT OR OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE TO US AT THE MOMENT, SO PLEASE DO NOT ORDER IT. SORRY. Presented by the Country Music Hall Of Fame, here's a great collection from what's one of Allan's favorite country western genres, the truck driving song! Songs about truckstop waitresses, black coffee, night runs, little white pills, and dangerous curves (of both the asphalt and female kind). Of course, these 20 tracks are far from a complete collection (what? no Red Sovine?) but this disc does cover many of the most seminal truckin' tunes over the 30 year span of 1939 to 1969, from the very first big rig hit "Truck Driver's Blues" (Cliff Brown & His Boys, 1939) to one of the first truck drivin' hillbilly boogie songs "Truck Driver's Boogie" (The Milo Twins, 1948) to the more somber "A Tombstone Every Mile" (Dick Curless, 1964) to Windy's best-loved trucking song, Red Simpson's "Roll, Truck, Roll" (1966), with its classic spoken word breakdown about his little boy drawing pictures of trucks all day at school... Over half the disc is drawn from the the truck driving song's commercial heyday in the Sixties. Hopefully though, a Volume 2 is in the works, covering the '70s and beyond.

V/A True Kings Of Norway (Spikefarm) cd 14.98
THIS IS CURRENTLY OUT OF PRINT OR OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE TO US AT THE MOMENT, SO PLEASE DO NOT ORDER IT. SORRY. From the darkest past we summon thee: early 7" vinyl releases from several of Norway's elite black metal tyrants, now collected on one handy cd. So if in 1992 you missed picking up Immortal's 7" debut, or failed to get Emperor's "As The Shadows Rise" 7" ep in '94, now's your chance to add those tracks to your collection. Rare 7" tracks by Dimmu Borgir, Arcturus, and the somewhat out-of-their-league Ancient are also found here. Far from most of those bands' current highly-polished, produced sounds, these early singles are nothing if not steeped in a raw, primitve black metal urgency and atmosphere that still makes the blood run cold. And, if these classic cuts weren't enough, this digipak also includes an amazing fold-out "map" of the Norwegian blackmetal community, a kind of convoluted family tree demonstrating the unholy links among these bands and many many others. Very cool, almost essential for true black metal fiends.
V/A True Soul: Volume 1 (Now-Again) cd + dvd 22.00
Watch your back Numero Group, as Now Again has also been releasing some amazing soul reissues over the last few years. With this compilation they put their soul discovery focus on the True Soul label from Arkansas during the 1960s and 1970s. Much like the US punk/hardcore scene that would arise in the early '80s, the underground soul scene embodied a similarly DIY spirit, and thus shared many parallels, regional labels, record stores being magnets for the scene, sharing practice spaces and recording time, playing in unusual venues, and doing it all for the love of the music, even if fame and fortune never came, no matter how much these fellas sound like James Brown! Billed as 'Deep Sounds From The Left Of Stax', this really is deep hitting, nitty gritty soul and funk that isn't about flash and appearance as much as it is really getting to the heart of things. We blast this in the store, imagining being in some musty, smoke filled lounge in Arkansas as folks like Thomas East, Albert Smith, Ren Smith, and The Leaders play sweat dripping sets. Don't worry if none of the above mentioned names don't ring a bell for you, they didn't for us either. But this collection further proves how much amazing soul was created during this special era that never got the wide attention it so totally deserved. Super swank packaging, in a thick hardback book with tons of text, color photos, and record graphics, definitely giving these musicians their due! Plus there's a whole dvd disc featuring local TV performances by a bunch of these artists, 1973's True Soul Review, wow, amazing they dug this up too, way cool to see.

V/A Turbo's Tunes (Kill Rock Stars) cd 4.98
Kill Rock Stars was so eloquent with the subtitle "A Kill Rock Stars Retrospective Sampler" that we needn't mention anything beyond the track listing: Sleater Kinney, Unwound, The Bangs, The Gossip, Holly Golightly, Cadallaca, Har Mar Superstar, Two Ton Boa, Jim Carroll, Kleenex, and many more!
V/A Turkey: Music From the Yayla (Ocora) cd 14.98
V/A Turkish Delights (Grey Past) cd 23.00
THIS IS CURRENTLY OUT OF PRINT OR OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE TO US AT THE MOMENT, SO PLEASE DO NOT ORDER IT. SORRY. We are all quite excited about the cd release of Turkish Delights comp (though Byram's a bit irked 'cause he bought the original vinyl and now is faced with a cd version that adds 11 extra tracks!). In total, there's 26 tracks here, dating from 1965 to 1971, of some of the best garage psych that we've ever heard -- from Turkey or anywhere else for that matter. The Turkish rock scene appears to have begun in earnest in 1956 when the English instrumental group The Shadows made their impression on Turkish teens. Given that many people in Turkey didn't even speak English, it's pretty impressive how well they assimilated a completely foreign music and excelled in it better than most of their American and British counterparts. Some of the tracks like Mavi Isiklar's "Great Airplane Strike of 1967" (a Paul Revere & the Raiders cover) are spitting images of garage-psych from the occident, but others like Cem Karaca & Apaslar's "Suya Giden Alli Gelin" are unmistakably Eastern. It's these tracks, that combine the rock n' roll structure and instrumentation augmented with Turkish instruments, scales and singing that really kick ass. Those of you that have already picked up the excellent "Hava Narghile" compilation know what we mean, but what was great about that collection is exponentially better on this one! Get it. Along with the new cd version, we now have more copies of the "Turkish Delights" LP (which was so hard to get when it first came out that we only ever had a handful and were never able to list it). 15 tracks on this baby instead of the 26 on the cd, but what you lose in bonus cuts you gain in, uh, vinyl. And the art looks better, we think.

V/A Turkish Freakout (Bouzouki Joe) cd 17.98
Three little words guaranteed to get us all excited: Turkish psych comp. That's all it takes. (A fourth word, used in the title here, "Freakout", doesn't hurt either.) Compilations like Turkish Delights, Hava Narghile, and the Turkish installment of Love Peace & Poetry have all been staples here at AQ, and have turned us on to so many amazing bands like Mogollar, Ersen, and 3 Hur-el. Our only worry with a new Turkish psych comp is that it will redundantly duplicate tracks we've already got, but fortunately that's not the case with this one, only a few of the 18 tracks here had we heard before, with some of the artists being completely new to us. And, also, awesome! Focusing solely on selected rare 45 rpm 7" singles releases, dating from the late '60s to 1980, this comp is evidence that it was a groovy decade in Istanbul for sure. Funky -and- folky (yes, often at the same time), these tracks incorporate all the fuzz guitar, ethnic instrumentation, percolating percussion, exciting rhythms, and soulful vocals we've come to expect from the Turkish psych scene. It's a mesmerizing mix, there's a lot of highlights here, we can't really mention 'em all, but just to give you an idea, the first track, by Okay Temiz, sounds almost like it could come from that soundtrack by Rockford Kabine we made Record Of The Week recently, a sultry and "exotic" instrumental groove with some wild whoopin' elements that remind us of a Jean-Claude Vannier production. Then there's the cinematic strings and quasi doomy-riffing of Erkin Koray's dramatic "Sev Digim". And Alpay's "Seni Dilenyorum" is one we'd play for a friend wondering what all the vintage Turkish psych fuss is about. If they didn't dig that, we'd feel real sorry for them. In addition to those, the line-up of artists here includes Kardaslar, Cem Karaka, Apaslar, Beyaz Kelebekler, Ajda Pekkan, Sevil & Ayla, Baris Manco, Rifat Oncel, Ersen, Onder Bali, and Arif Sag. And fortunately, the deluxe digipack includes a thick 40 page booklet, full of liner notes about 'em all, along with original 45 sleeve art. Nicely done, as comps/reissues go. And on top of that, most of the other Turkish psych collections we mentioned at the top of this review are now out of print, so this will become a go-to comp for us in one of our favorite genres.

V/A Turkish Freakout 2: Psych-Folk 1970-1978 (Bouzouki Joe Records) cd 21.00
We're always saying we just can't get enough of that vintage Middle Eastern psych music, hence a sequel to last year's great Turkish Freakout comp is quite freaking welcome! Here 'tis, 17 more tracks from rare Turkish records (mostly 7" singles) of the seventies, by some artists we'd heard of, and plenty of others we hadn't. As with volume one, there's definitely lots of great tunes here we hadn't come across before! The lineup includes: Baris Manco, Edip Akbayram, Cem Karaca + Mogollar, Afet Serenay, Kerem Guney, Gokben, Gulcan Opel, Sevil and Ayla, Kamuran Akkor, Ozel Turkbas, Perihan, Sakir Oner Gunham, Sirin, and Kenan. Lush and lively stuff all of it, like belly dancing music taken to psychedelic extremes. Amongst these tracks, you'll hear lots of lovely female singers, moody men too, and the rhythms of stately folk dances infused with FUZZ, with orchestral strings, electric saz, synth, indeed wild Moog madness, flutes and whistling, wah wah guitar and funky drum breaks, stuff that's groovy and spacey and exotically poppy. The usual in other words. There's a thick 36 page booklet stuffed inside this digipack, one reason it's so thick is they devote a whole page to a full color reproduction of the single sleeve or lp jacket from which each of these tracks is taken. On the facing page, some commentary from the anonymous compiler. If you look through the booklet, you'll no doubt notice Afet Serenay. She has two cuts on here, both from her 1978 full-length lp Bir Of Ceksem. So that album cover is reproduced twice, and that's cool 'cause she's worth a second look for her fashion sense alone, posing on the cover of her record wearing a colorful rainbow striped wool sweater/dress and matching legwarmers. Wow. Also, one of Serenay's tracks, "Maden Dagi", you might recognize from the beloved Selda's somewhat different version of the same tune (they're folk songs after all) on her album Vurulduk Ey Halkim Unutma Bizi (aka Vol. 2). Likewise, the Edip Akbayram track here, "Mehmet Emmi" was also done by Selda. Just like the first installment, worth freaking out over if you love Turkish psych - or any such international sounds - like we do. FYI, the gatefold double lp vinyl version we have now comes with a limited, bonus 7".

THIS IS CURRENTLY OUT OF PRINT OR OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE TO US AT THE MOMENT, SO PLEASE DO NOT ORDER IT. SORRY. A really nice cd version of the four vinyl Turntables by the Bay comps. This contains most but not all of the tracks from that series, along with really detailed liner notes, contact info for the DJs, etc. With tracks from star turntablists Q-Bert and other Skratch Piklz, the Groove Robbers featuring DJ Shadow, Eddie Def, Live Human, Peanut Butter Wolf... and my personal favorite DJ Quest. Wow. A strong collection of work by our Bay Area DJs -- no duds, worth the money.

V/A Twenty Years Of Dischord (Dischord) 3cd 23.00
This box set commemorates Dischord's first 20 years as a label and is an amazing and lovingly put together artefact. Three cds, with one track from each band on the label (including one track from each band on the seminal "Flex Your Head" compilation). The third disc is all unreleased material and contains some very early video footage of The Untouchables, The Teen Idles, SOA, Faith, Void and Deadline. 73 songs in all (21 unreleased) and a 134 page book with full page bio for each band written by Ian MacKaye, Jeff Nelson and Henry Rollins. This label has been such an inspiration to so many labels, bands, stores, activists, individuals, whatever. Hard working and obviously still in love with music even after all these years. The box set is sequenced in chronological order which is kind of cool because you get a feel for the way the bands and the label progressed, and because it's such a family affair, being that all the bands were from D.C., there are people showing up in a several different bands, so it illustrates the individual changes and transformations as well. So nice. The 50 bands are as follows: Teen Idles, The Untouchables, State of Alert, Minor Threat , Void, Youth Brigade, Government Issue, Scream, Iron Cross, Red C, Deadline, Artificial Peace, Faith, Skewbald, Marginal Man, Gray Matter, Rites of Spring, Beefeater, The Snakes, Dag Nasty, Embrace, Soulside, Egg Hunt, One Last Wish, Fire Party, Ignition, Three, Shudder to Think, Happy Go Licky, Fugazi, Lungfish, Fidelity Jones, The Nation of Ulysses, Holy Rollers, Jawbox, Severin, The High-Back Chairs, Autoclave, Circus Lupus, Branch Manager, Slant 6, Hoover, Trusty, Smart Went Crazy, The Crownhate Ruin, The Warmers, The Make-Up, Bluetip, Faraquet, Q and Not U.

V/A Two Effs (Fflint Central) cd-r 9.98
THIS IS CURRENTLY OUT OF PRINT OR OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE TO US AT THE MOMENT, SO PLEASE DO NOT ORDER IT. SORRY. Fflint Central is a U.K. label run by two extraordinarily nice guys and darn fine hosts (good enough to befriend a sick and bedraggled on-tour Andee and buy him Cokes). Fflint specializes in experimental electronics and harsh abstract noise. One would think that there's enough, or too much of both, but the men from Fflint have that something special (fuck-you attitude? undefinable sound? sense of humor?) that makes these records way better and way more interesting than the majority of the 'electronica' we hear these days. Fans of VV/M, Lesser and other 'troublesome' electonica will dig this stuff. Affordable CD-Rs. Go ahead and take a chance. You may regret it... Here is the ubiquitous 'label sampler', but in this case, it's almost better to treat it like its own release, since there is so much overlap/incest among the Fflint stable of artists. All unreleased stuff form almost everyone on the label. From ear-splitting noise to soothing drones to pounding distorted beats to hypnotic pulses. From calculated compositions to all out mayhem. A good overview of an awesome new label.

V/A Two Million Tongues Festival (Bastet) cd 14.98
Plastic Crimewave along with the ever so busy Arthur Magazine curated this great fest in Chicago which took place earlier this year. A fest with AQ faves all over it. And this comp of bands who performed at the fest is a nice consolation for those of us who couldn't be there. Festival or no, this is simply one badass compilation! With everyone from Mountains to Josephine Foster, Tony Conrad to Hototogisu, No Neck Blues Band to Jack Rose, you can tell this was a fest put together with great taste and a sense of how important varied sounds is to keep folks' attention. None of the bands sound exactly the same, but there is a definite stylistic thread that runs throughout. Maybe we'll make it to the next Two Million Tongues Fest...until then we'll be hanging out right here with this.

V/A U-Sound, Vol. One (Parallelism) cd 15.98
Parallelism is the London based imprint run by Matador head /Air Traffic Controllers guitarist Gerard Cosloy. Portland, OR based Tom Greenwood and Josh Stevenson (of Jackie-O Motherfucker and Cast Exotic Archives, respectively), collect recordings documenting the worldwide post-psychedelic underground via their Unity Sound Archive label (aka U Sound). In short, Greenwood and Stevenson set up short-lived (about one week long) installations in which a revolving cast of artists continuously perform prearranged and/or improvisational pieces that last several hours at a time. This two cd set compiles excerpts of live performances in various U Sound installations throughout 1999 in NYC. Artists featured: Matthew Valentine, Glands of External Secretion, Daniel Carter, Black Magic, Decaer Pinga (Prick Decay), Tara Jane O'Neil solo and with Sai Flora, Michael Hurley, Eagle Blood (Brian Degraw, Saul Williams, actor Leo Fitzpatrick and Angelblood member / fashion designer Jess Holzworth), Greg Anderson, Jeff Perkins, PG Six, Tim Barnes & Glen Kotche, Double Leopards, Sewerz, Unity Sound Ensemble, Furchick w/ the Armaround, Josh Burkett, Tono-Bungay, The Doves, Army Of Ghosts (ex-Aylers Angels), Far Fetched (Paul Major), Lady E Quartet (with Dean Roberts and Tim Barnes) and various formulations of Jackie-O Motherfucker. An excellent document of an amazing ongoing project!

V/A U.S. Pop Life Vol. 15: Power Energy "On the High Wire" (Contact) cd 14.98
THIS IS CURRENTLY OUT OF PRINT OR OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE TO US AT THE MOMENT, SO PLEASE DO NOT ORDER IT. SORRY. Things have been rather quiet from the U.S. Pop Life camp for quite some time, but Contact Records ringleader Yoko Sawai bursts back with two new compilations (complete with visuals). A huge U.S. pop music fan, she moved to New York from Osaka a couple of years ago, and has been tirelessly releasing cds of diverse indie music with the intent to introduce Japanese kids to the American bands she loves. Basically each release is themed geographic or stylistic - whatever catches her fancy. Initially they leaned towards soft'n'twee pop, but over the years they've gotten progressively more abrasive and angstful. Volume 15 is no exception! It contains a stellar cast of very now, blisterin' bands like the Liars (exclusive track), Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Hella, Erase Errata, the Cherry Valence, and Enon (exclusive track). Please note: many tracks are previously (or soon to be) released in the U.S. however it's her hope that her comps will turn some Japanese kids onto the bands' albums from which these songs came. On this side of the Pacific however, they're the equivalent of a kickass comp tape from your friend Yoko.

Initially they leaned towards soft'n'twee pop, but over the years they've gotten progressively more abrasive and angstful. Oh, and don't be mislead by the titles! She does take quite a few liberties with band categorization. For example, this one, "Extension Of Electro" features few artists who fall under or near the genre "electro", but somehow Yoko's enthusiasm overrides any urge to be nitpicky. Volume 16 contains a dozen tracks including ones by Soviet, Yume Bitsu, Thievery Corporation, Andrew Duke and Ghost Orchids. Please note: many tracks are previously (or soon to be) released in the U.S. however it's her hope that her comps will turn some Japanese kids onto the bands' albums from which these songs came. THIS IS CURRENTLY OUT OF PRINT OR OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE TO US AT THE MOMENT, SO PLEASE DO NOT ORDER IT. SORRY. This time around Japanese music fanatic Yoko Sawai and her label Contact Records shine the spotlight brightly on the Chicago/Midwest U.S. indie world. Illuminated by its beam are 17 prime examples of the area's angstful, emo, post punk, and predominantly boy bands including Owls, Dianogah, Sweep The Leg Johnny, 90 Day Men, Toe, Vermont, Pele, Milemarker, A-Set and Atombombpocketknife.
V/A U.S. Pop Life Vol.1: Counterattack Of U.S. Indie (Contact) cd 16.98
THIS IS CURRENTLY OUT OF PRINT OR OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE TO US AT THE MOMENT, SO PLEASE DO NOT ORDER IT. SORRY. The very first volume of this wonderful pop series from Contact Records. A gal with a great love for American lo-fi pop, Yoko Sawai the sweetie pie behind this Osaka, Japan indie label, has gathered a more-than-lovely array of aural sweets. Highlights of these two dozen songs include the gorgeous, soaring gem Ninotchka's "I've Got Wings" (fyi, this cd is almost worth getting for this song alone! Previously available only on a 7" from Grimsey Records.), the super perky "Just Like Henry" by Dressy Bessy, and Of Montreal's fragile "It's Easy To Sleep When You're Dead". Also happily present: Aislers Set, Silver Scooter, and Kittycraft. Note: some of these tracks are previously released in the U.S.
V/A U.S. Pop Life Vol.2: Fanfare Of 2000 (Contact) cd 16.98
THIS IS CURRENTLY OUT OF PRINT OR OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE TO US AT THE MOMENT, SO PLEASE DO NOT ORDER IT. SORRY. The second installation of this American pop series from Japan. Much more eclectic than volume one. Quite a few familiar faces: Macha, Beachwood Sparks, I Am Spoonbender, Bright Eyes, The Legendary Jim Ruiz Group, Elf Power, and The Music Tapes. And yes, we should let you know that a number of these tracks are previously released domestically.
V/A U.S. Pop Life Vol.5: Invention To Be Nobody & Nowhere - Athens (Contact) cd 16.98
THIS IS CURRENTLY OUT OF PRINT OR OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE TO US AT THE MOMENT, SO PLEASE DO NOT ORDER IT. SORRY. Usually Contact Records' boss Yoko Sawai can be found waving the pretty, sugar pop flag, but every once in a while she throws a bit of a twist into the works. Like rocking out front and center at a slew of heavy-duty The Locust / I Am Spoonbender / Convocation Of shows, or releasing this "experimental" music compilation in her U.S. Pop Life series. While the artists on this compilation are far from we would call experimental (no Maurizio Bianchis or Francisco Lopezs here), they definitely gently push the edges of Yoko's pop envelope. 16 tracks including Arab on Radar, The Faint, Swirlies, Lightning Bolt, Kilowatthours. Note: as with other U.S. Pop Life collections, some tracks have been previously released.
V/A U.S. Pop Life Vol.7: Random Access Music Machine - Experimental (Contact) cd 16.98
THIS IS CURRENTLY OUT OF PRINT OR OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE TO US AT THE MOMENT, SO PLEASE DO NOT ORDER IT. SORRY. Contact Records head mistress Yoko Sawai recently made the mighty move from Osaka to New York City, but has shown no sign of slowing in her quest to compile a slew of cool, eclectic pop pursuits from all over the globe. Some of her recent releases included a cd from Calvin, Don't Jump! as well as 7"s from I Am Spoonbender and Yuji Oniki. On this the fifth volume of her U.S. Pop Life series, she focuses on Athens, GA. The track listing reads like a who's who of the Elephant 6 / Kindercore world including The Sunshine Fix (lead by former Olivia Tremor Controller Bill Doss), Japancakes, Of Montreal, and I Am The World Trade Center. Twenty tracks in all, many previously released in the U.S.
V/A U.S. Pop Life Vol.8: Journey To The End Of Twilight - North East (Contact) cd 16.98

Volume 8 of the U.S. Pop Life Series throws the spotlight on bands from the northeastern states: Pennsylvania, New York, New Hampshire, Maine, and Rhode Island to be exact. Decidedly less sweet than others in the series, this disc features songs from Rainer Maria, Lilys, Lenola, and Rebuilthangartheory. Please note: some tracks are previously released domestically.

Volume 5 in the popular Ultra Chicks series which compiles underground French girlpop tunes that would've been consigned only to memory were it not for the intrepid loyalty of one guy that's compiling these tracks onto disc and pressing them in small quantities. We usually run out of this series within days after it arrives, so don't delay.

V/A Un Hommage A Moondog (trAce) cd 23.00
With 2006 coming to an end, one of the things we are happiest about this year is that now, seven years after his passing, Moondog is finally starting to get some of the recognition, praise, and attention his amazing music deserves. This tribute album put out by the French label, trAce, is one of those rare compilations, which feature mostly artists we had never heard of (we already liked Jean-Jacque Birge and Ilitch, but Groupe d'Essai 3, Konki Duet, Stefan Laktos, Xenia Narati, Dragibus, et.al. are new to us) all of which ended up blowing us away! A lot of Moondog's uniqueness, comes from his highly individual use of percussion, his strong Native American and African influence as well as his deep appreciation of classical music, and the artists on this homage to Moondog totally get it. A wide range of sounds and perspectives capturing the great scope of sound that Moondog employed. Being both challenging and rewarding, experimental yet so totally listenable and pleasing. Interspersed with short snippets of Moondog speaking, culled from an interview for Radio Triad in 1971, it's so nice to actually feel his presence on this record. Moondog's music has this way of being able to totally entrance, romance, and sweep one off their feet. Creating a world that is playful yet totally intense. We're so happy to report that this tribute to the genius of Moondog reaches that special space. So rare that a tribute album is able to do that, but in this case, this is not merely some people playing someone else's songs, this is the work of people whose souls and way of looking at music have been totally enriched by the magic of Moondog and this record feels like such a perfect way to celebrate his legacy.

V/A Undecided (PSF) cd 22.00
Six of Japan's most out-there solo sonic performers each get a ten-minute-or-so track apiece on this new PSF compilation, Undecided. It's subtitled "JMSA Presents Wave from Free Music" but since that's about all it says here in English, your guess is as good as ours as to what that means exactly, although we surmise that the pieces here were recorded live at some festival. The six idiosyncratic voices contributing to this compilation are: Keiji Haino grinding out a dissonant hurdy gurdy drone, Imai Kazuo meditating on some very quiet guitar, Ohkuchi Junichiro playing some dreamy, abstract piano, Satoh Michihiro plucking his traditional tsugaruzyamisen, Otomo Yoshihide making a severe noise racket with turntables and guitar, and Urabe Masayoshi taking this disc's final step into the void with alto sax and breath. While the extremes represented here -- from the gentle sounds of Junichiro's piano to the scraping din of Haino's hurdy gurdy and who knows what else -- means that this doesn't exactly flow that well from track to track, the contents of this disc represent a fine sampler of the work of these very individual individuals. And the cd booklet is filled with beautiful black and white photography of the performers along with Japanese-language text.

V/A Under The Covers Vol. 2 (I Hate Rock N' Roll) lp 17.98
V/A Underwater Peoples Summertime Showcase 2009 (Underwater Peoples) cd 4.98
First cd release from this new-ish label specializing in that sort of woozy lo-fi pop sound that seems to be sweeping the nation, aQ included. Anyone into Blank Dogs, John Maus, Ariel Pink, Ducktails, Zola Jesus, Gary War, as well as other garage-y pop rockers like Oh Sees, the Intelligence, Ganglians, etc., will find that this awesome, bargain priced comp will probably hit the spot big time. A few names we know, Ducktails, Julian Lynch, but a WHOLE bunch we don't (ahem, Frat Dad), but everything here taps into that same sort of DIY, broken 4-track, warped and twisted pop aesthetic that drives the above mentioned fave. Frat Dad for instance, besides having the WORST band name, and the WORST song title ("Brosef") comes up with some cool reverby garage pop that would sound right at home between your Ty Segall record and your Oh Sees record. Pill Wonder are cool too, their songs sounding like Guided By Voices covering Beach Boys, all squiggly feed back and blown out bass wrapped around skittery drums and jangly guitars, and buried sort of lush harmonies. Real Estate are more songy, employing som reverb and delay, but for the most part relying less on texture and production, offering up two really nice twangy jams, one sort of rocking, one laid back and sort of Morricone-esque. Julian Lynch, a sometime collaborator with many aQ pop faves, has recently surfaced as an artist in his own right, and his tracks here are cool too, the Ducktails-ish calypso tropical pop of "Banana Jam Pt. 1" and the fuzzy loping indie dirge of "Droplet On A Hot Stone", with its distorted vocals and stumbling drums, wheezing synths, and murky ambience. It's all pretty good. Especially for all you who have been digging this particular sound lately, which we know is a LOT of you. Also included here are jams by Broken Trees, Liam The Younger, Andrew Cedermark, Family Portrait, Dana Jewell and Sad City. A steal at $5!

V/A Underwater Peoples Winter Review 2010 (Underwater People's) cd 5.98
The 2009 Summer installment of the Underwater Peoples label sampler was a big hit around here, super cheap, with tons of bands we dug, and a bunch more we had never heard, but end up digging as well. So hear we are a few months later and it's time for the second installment, for Winter 2010, and once again, lots of faves: Julian Lynch, Ducktails, Real Estate, some new discoveries like Pill Wonder (whose full length is reviewed elsewhere on this list), and the embarrassingly named Frat Dad, as well as a whole mess of new names, some of which will join the above on frequent play. Much like Captured Tracks and Sacred Bones, Underwater Peoples have a sound, and a somewhat solid stable of regulars, so you sort of know what you're getting into, twisted, lo-fi pop, sometimes heavy on the tropical vibe, definitely a distinct surf vibe (or more specifically, some Beach Boys worship), some electronics, some jangly guitars, plenty of fuzz, lots and lots of reverb and delay and echo, but at the core of all these jams is pop, pure and simple, in all sorts of permutations. Julian Lynch offers up some hazy electronic tinged groove pop, almost like a way more twisted and low fidelity Postal Service, with even dreamier vocals. Pill Wonder sound a bit like Fleet Foxes if they were less folk, and more tweaked pop, complete with lush harmonies and some fake synth strings. Ducktails do their drug addled broken 4-track, island tropical calypso dream pop thing, and it sounds as good as ever. Real Estate go all acoustic, and manage to whip up something pretty lovely and lush. Frat Dad unleash a super distorted chunk of blown out jangle pop. New names this time around that we're digging, Fluffy Lumber, with their warped eighties new wave synth pop, Big Trouble who sound a bit like Jesu or Nadja, if those guys recorded in their bedroom on an old tape deck, and Liam The Younger who kick up a seriously rad nineties sounding chunk of heavy shoegazey indie rock. But there's plenty more. So dig in. The price is definitely right, and odds are at least some (maybe even most) of these jams will end up on a future mix tape or on nonstop repeat play in your headphones...

V/A Unfamiliar Ceilings (Tear ) cd 11.98
V/A Unfinished (Sub Rosa / Utopian Diaries) cd 15.98
Two tracks from Locust. One each from Mick Harris (Scorn), Lilith, and David Toop.
V/A Unheard Ofs & Forgotten Abouts (Tompkins Square / Pawn) cd 14.98
Oh how we love old 78s! The "antique" but still effective analog technology offering a window into the dusty past, the once-lively musical traditions of fading cultures from around the world, the atmospheric patina of surface crackle... Nowadays, thanks to collectors like Robert Millis, Jonathan Ward, Ian Nagoski, and (in this case) Frank Fairfield, there's been some great compilations of 78 rpm treasures released on more modern formats for us all to enjoy, often sourced from 78s the "ethnic" realm where there's still lots of good digging to be done by these dedicated souls. If you loved Victrola Favorites, Excavated Shellac, The Black Mirror, Sprigs Of Time, or other collections we've had along those lines, then the aptly titled Unheard Ofs & Forgotten Abouts is right up your alley! There's a selection of 16 rare gramophone recordings presented here, all culled from the archives of Frank Fairfield, an LA musician whose own efforts are inspired by the sorts of old timey stuff he digs up on 78. This is basically a "mix tape" of a bunch of his faves, bound by no stylistic or geographic restrictions. Amongst these tracks, which range in date from as early as 1916 to as late as 1964 (they were still releasing music on 78s in the sixties, in Africa), you get bagpipes from Scotland and France, blues from the States, festive dance music from Japan, field recording of Hopi hunting song, Indonesian "tembang" singing, Southern (and Midwestern) fiddlin', Byzantine liturgical chant, a Gypsy orchestra from New Jersey, "anonymous Sudanese wandering minstrels", and more. All all wonderful stuff. One of the big highlights for us might be the "exotic" Tahitian groove of George "Tanutu" Archer's rhythmic "Ama Ama" from 1945, which is what's practically rock n' roll played on pahu (Tahitian bass drum) and guitar, with chanted vocals. Surf music starts here! Also, "La Bamba" takes on a whole new character in the version heard here, by Mexican folk harpist Andres Huesca and band. And sinners take note, this disc winds up with the powerful sermonizing and testifyin' of one Reverend Frank Cotton, a not-entirely-spoken word piece entitled "By The Pool Of Siloam" that really stirs up the flock! Compiler Fairfield provides detailed liner notes on each track in the cd booklet, giving learned historical, musicological, and technological perspective on the recordings. It's clearly a labor of love, and comes highly recommended by us.

V/A Unholy Trinity (Fflint Central) cd 9.98
THIS IS CURRENTLY OUT OF PRINT OR OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE TO US AT THE MOMENT, SO PLEASE DO NOT ORDER IT. SORRY. Another ear shredding, lung collapsing, skull crushing, hair raising, gut wrenching, ass kicking, soul soothing, spiritually devastating missive from out pals at Fflint (supplying us with some of the best experimental electronica in the world!) to tide you over until the results due from the even more unholy alliance between Berkowitz, Lake and Dahmer and our own Andee's tUMULt label. This here 'Unholy Trinity' collects tracks from Fflint regulars Berkowitz, Lake and Dahmer and Cousin Silas as well as newcomer The Gideon Leeches. The 'Leeches start things off with some shimmery ambience, underpinned by a shuffling jazzy snare and lots of crystalline burbling and what sounds like the theme from the Partfridge Family, slowed down and transmitted from the bottom of a swamp. Track two finds the Leeches in more of a noisy mood, weaving together synth pulses, timestretched buzz and clattery mahinery into a drizzly doomy soundscape. Cool stuff. Look forward to more in the future. Tracks 3 and 4 come courtesy of Cousin Silas, who has one Fflint full length under his belt. Track three is a gently dreamy ambient wash of soothing tones and warm thrum. Track four is SCARY. Creepy castle ambience, with drones, and distant clanks and skittering insects in your headphones, threatening to find their way into your dark warm brain. Berkowitz, Lake and Dahmer close things out with two tracks of ominous doom and gloom. Like the soundtrack to an Argento or Fulci film, this stuff is SINISTER to the nth degree. Gloomy ambient drones and ghoulish wails swirl through the abyss while people chant what sounds like 'Do it!' in the distance. Huge throbbing bass notes punctuate the grim atmosphere and the anguished (and heavily reverbed) voices of disembodied spirits reach from beyond the grave. By the final track, a thick granular drone is introduced adding tension to the already frightening proceedings, while Keith Emerson keyboards are dismantled and slowed down and spread in a thick paste over the whole damn thing until the whole thing finishes in a cacaphonous burst of desiccated samples and dismantled melodies. Another awesome release from the mighty Fflint central!

V/A Unindie Listening (Janky) cd 5.98
FYI: This cd is subtitled "A DJ Mix Of Indie Rock And Hip Hop That's All Whirlwind Heat And Flash. By Matt Loomis And Aye Jay. Hosted By Fred Armisen Of SNL". Whoa, heat and flash... and Fred?! Who can resist that combo? If you're one of the few who require more cajoling, we can tell you that this mix disc comes from those folks who brought you the Indie Rock Connect The Dots Book as well as the Gangsta Rap Coloring Book. Here's a rundown of the artists whose material Loomis encorporated into his mash-ups. match-ups and scratch-ups: Steve Albini, Elliott Smith, Charizma, Peanut Butter Wolf, The Roots, Violent Femmes, Jeru The Damaja, Jay-Z, David Cross, Sonic Youth, Dead Prez, Pavement, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Newcleus, The Rapture, Christopher Walken, !!!, Sir Mix A Lot, Har Mar Superstar, Beat Happening, Modest Mouse, DJ Shadow, Flaming Lips, Fog and MF Doom. As you can see music worlds collide in this mix -- the indie hipsters and the hiphopsters. Many of the combos here may be more cause for head scratchin' than vinyl scratchin'! Seven tracks plus a not so "hidden" track for only six buckeroos. Nice.
