Banned in DC - Photos from the DC Punk Underground (79-85)

To commemorate ten years since the release of the seminal punk history book Banned In DC,
first published in 1988 by photographers Cynthia Connolly, Leslie Clague, and Sharon Cheslow,
and now in its fourth edition, Aquarius Records is proud to honor this community with the show
Banned In DC - Photos from the DC Punk Underground (79-85).
The exhibit will be on display from December 1, 1998 through January 31, 1999, and like the book,
will bring the world that spawned such influential bands as the Bad Brains, Minor Threat, S.O.A.
(with pre-Black Flag Henry Rollins), Scream, and Rites of Spring to the public eye.
More than a voyeuristic look into the world of Washington DC punk rock almost twenty years ago,
Banned in DC brings the viewer inside with photos of bands, fans, and label workers, as well as flyers to compliment the photos.
Many of the original contributors to the book will be featured in the show, including
San Francisco musician/writer and former Chalk Circle guitarist Sharon Cheslow,
internationally exhibited photographer Cynthia Connolly,
Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Lucian Perkins,
veteran punk/skate culture/rap photographer Glen E. Friedman
("Fuck You Heroes"), former Minor Threat member/Dischord Records co-owner Jeff Nelson,
New York filmmaker Jem Cohen, photographer/magazine publisher Jim Saah,
current Shudder To Think bassist Stuart Hill, photographers Lloyd Wolf and
Susie Josephson, former Beefeater singer Tomas Squip, and more.
All will be showing photos from the book, with the addition of some unpublished photos.
There will be an opening reception for Banned in DC at Aquarius Records on Tuesday December 8th
from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM. Aquarius is located at 1055 Valencia Street near 22nd Street.
