Aquarius Records celebrates the new year with an exhibit of paintings and drawings by Jeremiah Maddock. While the past four and a half years have seen Aquarius primarily showing photographs documenting various worldwide underground music scenes, this year we'd like to make room for more art of other media, with the consistent underlying theme being inspiration through music.
So it makes sense that Jeremiah Maddock should be our first exhibitor of the new year. Maddock, more than any artist we have ever known, finds his inspiration through music. "If the right music is playing," he says, "I'm not drawing on the surface of the piece -- I'm a mile deep into it, and that's the coolest high." Working in watercolor, gouache, acrylics, pens, and pencils, Maddock has been painting for eleven years and has spent the past seven as a resident of San Francisco. Last year he had two solo shows in the Bay Area and was responsible for the cover art and enclosed poster of local math-rock band Rumah SakitÍs debut record.
Maddock's work is exquisite. He applies layer after gossamer layer of color for depth, then goes over this field of color with pen and pencils, defining shapes and characters, adding expressive details, as the accompanying image demonstrates.
Please come to the opening reception for Jeremiah Maddock, Selected Paintings and Drawings, at Aquarius Records on Thursday February 1, 2001 - 6:30 - 8:30PM.
At 7:00pm Kenseth Thibideau of Rumah Sakit, Marty from local group Dilute, and Trevor Montgomery of Tarentel will perform.
