Peter Ellenby and Paul Romo
December 1, 1997 - January 30, 1998
As we prepare to cross our way into 1998, Aquarius Records is
pleased to announce our continued support of bringing fresh and diverse
images to the public with an upcoming exhibition by two local
photographers, Peter Ellenby and Paul Romo.
Peter Ellenby got into music photography after a stint as a band
manager. Ending up doing most of the band's photography and finding it
much more enjoyable than the business side of music, he decided to
pursue photography. "I have a pretty strange outlook on life, and I think it's
reflected in my images. My photos are lively, like a good band, and
convey a sense of intimacy with the musicians and their music. It's a frozen
moment of their lives, not a staged sterile slab. " His colorful live
shots of Jeremy Enigk and Chixdiggit, along with his humorous portraits of Ben
Lee and the Melvins convey Peter's attitude well. Ellenby is currently
Photographer/Photo Editor for the Bay Area magazine SnackCake! And has
been published in the Guardian, BAM, Rolling Stone.
On the flip side, Paul Romo has been photographing for years as
well, but has never been published nor exhibited. Aquarius Records is
proud to bring his work into the public eye for the first time for
everyone else to enjoy. Paul began taking pictures of bands not long
after he realized that the only way he could see what was going on was to be
right in front of the stage and in the middle of the action. Most of the
photos presented were created in small, often claustrophobic clubs. His
intimate, in your face portraits of The Dog Faced Hermans, Guitar Wolf,
and Bikini Kill are just some of his hidden work.
There will be an opening reception for the artists at Aquarius
Records on Tuesday, December 2nd from 6:30 PM until 8:00 PM.
Aquarius is located at 1055 Valencia Street near 22nd Street.
Please call the store at 647-2272 for any further information.
